It would stink if JJ is gone. Really liked his game.

But the reality is, his money is now freed up. There are a lot of portal kids out there unsigned so the staff needs to bring in the next JJ.
Problem is there were too many holes on the roster with Jefferson. Will be interesting to see how they fill them without him.

CW had a comment in his pod with Hassel about guys who have said they’d be back for three months backing out because of a change in the market. Have to wonder if he knew and was talking about Jefferson.

Hard to blame anyone that can make that money. But this all just ******* sucks. Just about over this whole damn thing at this point.

You could have said the same thing last spring regarding holes. We have Lipsey, Heise and Momcilovic returning. IMO that is a solid core to build around. Does it put pressure on the staff to hit on their portal adds this spring? Sure. Do we need a couple of the freshman to be solid contributors? You bet.

I like Jefferson's game. But lets not pretend he's Cooper Flagg or LJ Cryer. IMO the returning player with the most upside has always been Momcilovic. This is a summer where the staff needs to challenge him to work on his body like Georges did. Develop his handle and mid-range game. He can be elite. And IMO his best position might be a small-ball 4.

We will never compete with the big money. Need to develop high school players and find diamonds in the rough from mid majors to be successful. TJ did fine without Tyrese Hunter, we'll be fine without Jefferson.
ISU does not have to compete with the big money schools but we do have to be competitive with other schools in our area and conference. If the B10 and SEC schools are going to be able to fund things at 2 or 3 times our level, we will become nothing more than a minor league for those two conferences. Kids that are diamonds in the rough will play for a year, and then jump for the money, which is what is now happening in the smaller conferences and lower levels. You cannot blame the kids for taking the money, but we need rules that allow us to keep at least some of them.

Wow, so the tone of the posts in this thread have moved from trolling noise to done deal, all in barely 12 hours. That is....not good. This sucks for ISU and college basketball overall. But I can't hold it against Jefferson obviously, $2MM would be life-changing money for me and I'm guessing almost anyone else on this board. But yeah, sadz.

That is par for the course, whether true or not

It's just not worth worrying about.

I am an Iowa State fan first and foremost. I love going to games @ Hilton and @ Jack Trice Stadium and nothign is going to change that.

I've sat through AWFUL football and Basketball seasons, but I still enjoyed going to the games.

In the mean-time, I am glad that we have MC and TJ to steer the football and basketball ships during this turbulent time - which will eventually pass (one way or the other).

Let's Go State!

:bugle:
Thanks for the sane replies. Yet...

All this is a bit worrisome. It is a little hard not to worry about college athletics, which most of us love or we wouldn't be here, especially Cyclone athletics.

But I will keep your posts in mind! You may be better than the rest of us.

BTW, 'High Tide' back at ya! I sort of missed that 'funny' part on our recent posts of a different thread. Kudos.

Just so we’re clear, I would bet a significant sum that it’s more likely than not a that true super league would spell the end of college athletics. I don’t care what ratings are today. We’ve never been in a world in which G5 schools and below cut multiple sports or entire athletic departments, and poorly funded P4 schools do the same or hang on for dear life but become completely uncompetitive with the upper crust of the “big 2.” I don’t know how anyone could defend an argument that fans of schools left out will care about whatever silly pseudo round robin becomes the new “college football” and basketball. Iowa State fans are going to root for Iowa or Wisconsin because they no longer have a true rooting interest? Give me a break. “No, but it won’t matter, these are national brands.” Yeah, still not buying it. If that were as true as some suggest then the NFL wouldn’t still be king. In other words, Ohio State and Texas still have the benefit of having a good number of fans of other schools interested in their results because of how they may affect other teams—and they still don’t get NFL numbers. “That’s because there are more college teams, weighing down the average.” See my point above. Sure, Coastal Carolina’s meager ratings depress college football’s as a whole. But if Coastal no longer had a football program their fans wouldn’t root for Georgia. If you want to argue *enough* poorly funded P4 schools will stay competitive *enough* with the upper crust for the foreseeable future that ratings will be fairly stable, fine. But the logical extreme would not be good even for the big brands

Lol, I got ripped for saying he would leave. Big offers are out there for him. This is the era we are in now with NIL
But he said he was 100% staying! Can’t go back on his word!

For real though if JJ is gone, Cluff is going to feel like a huge miss.

Blame the Supreme Court. If you really want to have a debate about why we are here you just as well take this to the cave. It's politics. Everything is politics.
Yes, but the Big East and the A10 don’t have football, so they can spend more on basketball. Indiana has said they will take what the B10 average is on basketball rev share and double it. So just because the 20.5 is what might get distributed among Athletic Departments still won’t be fair across the board. These programs will still want to utilize collectives I’m sure to help separate them from other programs.
Maybe. But that $20.5m puts everyone more on par for now.

These NIL amounts are insane because this system goes away as soon as the d.ct judge signs off on the settlement.
