Jeff Orr...Super fan?

Who knows what happened...just hard for me to believe that Anyone, racist or not, is sitting in the first or second row dropping racial slurs.

The **** it don't. If this guy has been doing this for years he's been flying under the radar and deserves to be suspended or permanently banned. It's not acceptable and if I'm sitting around a fan like Orr I'd report the guy or have my seats changed if he is making racist comment. What an ***. And if reports are true that he told Smart to "Go Back To Africa" then this has probably been going on for years and you think that's ok.
Texas Tech Fan Told Marcus Smart to "Go Back to Africa" | Robert Littal Presents BlackSportsOnline

You have no ******* idea what he said. Either do any of the twitter idiots. If you don't like what people around you say, then report them. But flipping the bird or making non-racist comments is pretty standard and nothing wrong with it.

Where did I say making racist comments is ok? Please quote that. But since you have no idea IF he said a racist comment, you sound like an idiot.

Not a fan of Smart's attitude but I don't think we can blame Smart for this one.

Whole I am in no way trying to justify what was said, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING gives him the right to assault ANY fan unless he's defending himself from physical harm, (which he wasn't), no matter what transpired or was said. Smart needs to be suspended by OSU and/or the Big 12 and/or the NCAA.

I'm not saying this because of who he is. You simply have to draw a line that can not be crossed. An action like that could create chaos in an enclosed arena. The coaches, athletes, and the handful of police and private security that are on hand could never stop things if they got out of control.

If the guy made racial of ethnic slurs, report it, and ban him from future games, or even take away his season tix. Nothing justifies prejudice either, but it must be handled in the proper way to deter it from happening again. We don't need a soccer fan mentality in college sports, now or ever!

I guarantee if I heard an ISU fan sitting by me say something racist, the player wouldn't have time to react because I would hit him before the player had a chance.

Racist is one thing, but past acts (flipping bird, making faces) don't point to racist comments.

accoridng to OSU's radio broadcast, the fan threw out some racial name calling. If true that fan should be banished from future games, according to John Lucas, this guy has been doing this stuff for years. Its one thing to cheer and boo, but these are kids and we as fans need to remember that.

I kind of feel bad for Smart, i don't think he's a bad kid - he could have gone to the NBA last year and took the money, but he came back because he thought his team had a chance to win it all, plus he wanted to work on his game. Now the season is not going well, injuries and players thrown off the team have hurt. Plus I thought they said m.S. injuried his wrist a few weeks ago and that is a reason his shooting has been down. The kid is frustrated and some fat fan spews something out of his mouth and Smart finally had enough.

Smart should be suspended for his actions, but that fan should no longer be allowed in a Big 12 arena.

I agree with you. Regardless of what the fan said, Smart's actions warrant some sort of action. In some states, a person can actually hit someone first if the other person say "fighting words." If the "N" word was used, then they may constitute fighting words. However, that doctrine would not apply to a game situation as players' conduct is governed by conference or NCAA rules.

I fail to see how security needs to be better. People who are saying this are basically saying that coaches are incapable of controlling their athletes so you need to have enough security to make sure they stay on the court. There is plenty of security at these games. Unless you line the entire court with security there is no way any level of security could have reacted quickly enough to stop what happened. It took all of 4 seconds to start and end and be back on the court.

Security needs to be increased on out of contol fans.

link to "fighting words law" please.

that sounds like some sort of kangaroo court BS made up in a dirty towny bar in Iowa City so regulars can punch people that walk in the door and don't yell "geow hawlks" before ordering their steel reserve and spending their disability check on pull tabs.

I think the schools and the building management should have the right to remove (and ban) any fan that goes too far in verbally or physically attacking a player, coach or ref. It can be part of the "contract" that is formed when the person buys the ticket to the event. That is not out of line at all.

That being said, no matter what is said, I don't think a player, coach or ref should ever attack a fan physically. No matter what a fan says, it is still just words, and a physical response of any sort is not appropriate.

The other thing that really bothered me about this incident is that the refs and the Okie State coaching staff were not smart enough to get Smart back to the locker room and out of public view and possible public contact. That was just stupid. They were just inviting something more to happen. Very poorly handled, imo.

In my opinion it is not OK. However, we have a competitive culture that puts basketball on a pedestal. To play NCAA division 1 bball is a privilege. Smart, lost sight of that privilege. That privilege requires you to be the bigger person. Is it right for fans to heckle, or be downright mean? No. But again basketball is competitive and fans do what they can to help their team win. If it means bringing a person of Smarts caliber down to that low level, well Smart allowed it to work yesterday.

Whether the comment was so obnoxious to justify the push or not, how much cash did Smart cost himself last night? NBA owners surely worry about the consequences of another malice in the palace and here's thinking many wont be able to give a pass for Smarts reaction.

I don't know what was said or wasn't said, but I do get tired of hearing from some that these athletes owe us something because playing their sport is a "privilege". They worked hard to earn their scholarship or make the team, so just how is this a privilege? It's more of a privilege for me as an avid fan to be able to watch these great athletes perform after putting in the tons of hard work that got them to this high level in their sport. And they're making huge bucks for their colleges while they do it. The privilege is ours, just like it was a privilege to watch Mel put on a performance yesterday that I'll always remember.

which almost did happen, when he tries to turn around and go after a student when he's being lead away when everyone is rushing the court. i'm sure that student yelled an epithet too

it's not a privilege to watch a sporting event when you pay $ to be there. It is a privilege to represent a university through playing a sport. Marcus Smart did not represent his university well.

that being said I think their should be some sort of fan code of conduct where officials and ushers have the right to toss people who are out of control. would that have prevented this incident? I don't know, maybe. I know Marcus Smart using his brain and being mature would have most certainly prevented this incident. He can't handle lubbock, TX. how well do you think Smart will handle road games in NY, NJ, Philly, and other places where fans are far worse once he's in the league?

lost in all of this, that fan technically iced the game for his team. OSU was down two, and Smart had just fouled the shooter. FT's were coming. if the Ttech player misses a FT or two OSU has the chance to tie with 6 seconds left. instead a technical and Ttech shoots a bunch of FT's and get the ball, the game is over.

The foul was a Flagrant, meaning TT got the ball back

The foul was a Flagrant, meaning TT got the ball back

it was just a normal foul until he went into the stands. then it was the foul already committed in the act of shooting (2 shots), plus a T (2 shots and ball). so instead of just shooting 2 had Smart kept his head, Tech shot 4 and then got the ball.

And you know what was said and it's ok and I'm an idiot because reports are this clown made a racist comment. Even if he didn't make a racist comment he made sometime of inappropriate remark that even Orr himself admits he shouldn't of said which is above and beyond normal heckling from jerks in the stands.
