Jeff Orr...Super fan?

It's easy to demonize the Orr guy but I think it should be a wake up call to all fans. I always find it shocking how some fans in every fanbase think that a ticket purchase gives them the right to cross the line and act like a fake tough guy. 90 percent of the things fans say they would never have the balls to say in an alley

I'm late to the discussion........

I was watching the OSU-TTech game last night. Smart was down and there was a fan or two that were actually trying to help him up. Then all of a sudden, after he's part way up, he turns his head and gets up and shoves the fan. My initial reaction was "that fan just called him n*****r!" I couldn't read the fan's lips, but I thought that Smart would have never reacted with a shove if the fan had just called him a "flopper" or said "you're beat, get outta here." Watching replays and hearing what previous players have said about that fan today kind of confirms what I thought.

Now, I can't condone what Smart did. But if it were me, or I bet if were any CF poster, in that same position, we'd react the same way as Smart did.

Also, do you really think that other TTech fans would have said something to him if he did say n****r? Do you think anyone will step up today or tomorrow and tell the world what the fan said? I believe Smart. The fan should be banned from every Big 12 game, no matter the location, for several years. And Smart? Just a one game suspension.

I am not a Marcus Smart fan, but I can't say I would have reacted any different.

Jeff Orr isn't a "super fan" - he's a (fill in the blank with your own description).

If that's Texas Tech's definition of a "Super fan" then I'm glad I'm a Cyclone fan and not a Tech fan.

Just a reminder that some ISU fans sent racial slurs and death threats to Elijah Johnson via Twitter after the KU game in Ames last year.

Glass houses...

It does not matter at all what was said to Smart. He made the decision to turn around, walk up there and confront the guy and then physically touch him. Players get rude, nasty stuff yelled at them ALL THE time. Wait until he gets to the NBA and has to play in Philly or NY/NJ. IF he cannot handle one redneck moron then he is going to go postal in those cities.

Smart will get suspended for a few games (of course right before their game @ Big 12 #2 Texas and home versus Big 12 #3 Oklahoma, lucky dogs).

Orr clearly knew he was in the wrong and had crossed the line. You can see him instantly apologizing for what he said when Smart got in his face. Call me crazy, but I think Orr (a mature adult) said something he shouldn't have been yelling at a 19-20 year old kid.

Or maybe he was just worried he was about to get his *** beat...

Either way, Smart lost it. I think a four game suspension is in order. Orr should lose his seats for the rest of this year and be moved away from the court next year.

So in your opinion it is perfectly ok for a grown adult to curse at, name call, spout racial epitaphs to college kids....because."it happens all the time"?

It does matter what was said to Smart. Certainly it won't affect what happens to Smart suspension wise...that is a separate issue. But, if it was racial or in line with that then this superfan deserves some punishment too.

Who gives a ****. None of this is bad or worse than anything other fans do.

The **** it don't. If this guy has been doing this for years he's been flying under the radar and deserves to be suspended or permanently banned. It's not acceptable and if I'm sitting around a fan like Orr I'd report the guy or have my seats changed if he is making racist comment. What an ***. And if reports are true that he told Smart to "Go Back To Africa" then this has probably been going on for years and you think that's ok.

I guarantee if I heard an ISU fan sitting by me say something racist, the player wouldn't have time to react because I would hit him before the player had a chance.

Are you seriously comparing a near floor booster to random (likely not real, junior high) fans on the twitter?

Obviously Smart needs to just walk away, but this is being blown way out of proportion. He didn't go into the crowd looking for someone, the play took him to the floor by the seats. He got up and the TechTech guy who has a history said something. By Smart's reaction I tend to believe him over the Texas Tech fans. This should be at most a 1 game suspension.

IMO I think the main takeaway from this incident.....is that while wrong for Smart to do......fan decorum needs to be addressed, security needs to be better, and some human decency. You can talk some trash, support your team and not cross certain lines.

the excuse that it's gone on a long time, or it happens at every game is a horrible defense....as there's no situation where talking about a KIDS heritage, his family, or race is ok.

I fail to see how security needs to be better. People who are saying this are basically saying that coaches are incapable of controlling their athletes so you need to have enough security to make sure they stay on the court. There is plenty of security at these games. Unless you line the entire court with security there is no way any level of security could have reacted quickly enough to stop what happened. It took all of 4 seconds to start and end and be back on the court.

Wow - that's a lot of speculation to base a conclusion on...

In my opinion it is not OK. However, we have a competitive culture that puts basketball on a pedestal. To play NCAA division 1 bball is a privilege. Smart, lost sight of that privilege. That privilege requires you to be the bigger person. Is it right for fans to heckle, or be downright mean? No. But again basketball is competitive and fans do what they can to help their team win. If it means bringing a person of Smarts caliber down to that low level, well Smart allowed it to work yesterday.

Whether the comment was so obnoxious to justify the push or not, how much cash did Smart cost himself last night? NBA owners surely worry about the consequences of another malice in the palace and here's thinking many wont be able to give a pass for Smarts reaction.

You should have attended the Baylor-ISU womens games for the past several years at Hilton, and heard all the "lines" crossed by Cyclone fans yelling at Brittany Griner...
