Rhoads loved cleaning up the scraps of Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU etc. Even Florida, Florida State, Miami FL to some degree.
At the end of the day, scraps are still scraps. They aren’t better due to just being from Texas.

I don’t miss having classes filled with 2 star players and guys who wouldn’t even show up.

ya.. not sure if it was really a choice to target tx/fl or if it was missing out on the midwest guys (due to lack of recruiting success), and then being forced to take what was left... I think Chizik was successful (he was from the south) targeting that region, similar to how Mac targeted Iowa, Campbell targeting b10 states. But, I do think you tend to have more success targeting your home state / region.

Someone might have posted this already, but this was an interesting article in The Athletic yesterday:
Inside Iowa recruiting: Which college football programs recruit the state best? - The Athletic

None of the anonymous HS coaches wanted to say anything bad about Iowa or ISU, but it was encouraging that they all viewed the two schools pretty equally. It also seems like K-State and KU are working Iowa recruits pretty hard these days. Maybe it's the limited travel because of COVID the last couple years, but I think several midwest schools are refocusing on finding kids closer to home.

You realize that happens with every generation? It will happen with yours. I was born in the late 70's and it's already happening to people my age. Heck, it's happening to me somewhat.
ROFL. Jfc the old people's fee fees getting hurt in here today.

Yes, I read that article last night.. I thought it was interesting. I think Campbell's success in the state will only increase over time (assuming he stays for the long term).

I think there are three key factors:

1) Sustained Success: Campbell has raised the floor for the program. I think this will be an interesting year to see how we do after having 4 draft picks for the first time in almost 50 years (1977).

2) Ferentz Age: He is still only 66 so he could coach for another 10+ years. I do wonder if the changing landscape of college sports will push him to retire earlier than he might have.... fry retired at 69. If he retires or there is any question that he might, it could impact his ability to recruit (see the end of the snyder era at ksu).

3) Rivalry: At some point we have to start beating iowa right? Can't get much worse than the current slide we are on to start the Campbell era.... I know a lot of people will say it doesn't matter. But I do think extremes matter. You have to win at some point. When he starts to win that game, I think it will help the perception in the state even more.

At the end of the day, I think all of these are likely to trend in Campbell's favor over the next 5 years or so... again, assuming he stays. I like his chances getting us back to dominating in state recruiting the way we did under Mac toward the end of his 5 yr run vs. Iowa.

We don't have to win the Iowa game every year, but we can't keep losing it and looking inept in the process.

Recruit your speed in FL, AZ, and TX. The rest should be from the region.

Give me players #2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 from Iowa over #100, 154, 177, and 201 in Texas

Someone with more time and brain cells than me should do a study on this. I would argue that IA has had 5+ more actual high DI football players vs. what the recruiting services show year over year for decades.

I would have to actually research a bunch of guys, but the number of Iowa and ISU guys from the state (who were low ranked recruits) that end up being really good college players and even going pro seems way higher than a typical state. Iowa has been great at developing their players, but it says something about the kids that they're willing to put in the work from a 0-2 or 3 star Iowa kid. I think the last few years seeing 10-15 DI kids in the state is a reflection of that arbitrage window closing.

A rumor was that is the reason he took Shontrelle over David Johnson, who ended up at UNI and the Cardinals.
Hindsight being 2020, could you imagine what Matt Campbell could’ve done with Johnson?

I think he would’ve been all over him.

K-State's head coach is an Iowa boy, a Waterloo native. He coached at UNI & Loras so he probably still has coaching connections in Iowa.

Gotta be in better shape than Iowa they usually beat us in the 4th quarter!

I didn't think Iowa or Iowa State were recruiting David Johnson as a running back. Thought both were recruiting for defense.

Well, every FBS program missed on Johnson. I don't want to besmirch the guy but weren't there major grade issues that scared away anyone who was taking a look?
If true, don't you think it would have been worth a shot to get him qualified and enrolled especially a kid from Clinton? I mean, it's not like PR had a great program loaded with talent when this occurred. Worked for Mac and Troy Davis (and I realize this is hindsight, but dang...).
