Izaiah Brockington commits

Agree with that but I’m already seeing “bubble team”, and “if things go right” posts.
This team should be able to compete, but this is an entirely new roster. That will take time to gel and they still aren't all world. It should be a huge surprise if they are a bubble team at the end of the season.

I don't know why people insist on winding themselves up to unreasonable expectations leading up to the season. Maybe they enjoy being disappointed?

Again there is nothing wrong with people getting excited about possibilities. Where it’s ridiculous is when people stamp their feet and get pissed when their dreams aren’t met in year 1 of a new coach.

You’re right I do. Delusional posters that lap up the CF hype machine like dogs at the water bowl. 0-18 last year in conference people. 0-18.

While I do think we need to pump the breaks on a tourney birth this year considering where the program was we really shouldn't refer to this team the 2020 version.
The roster has been totally revamped and talent drastically improved with 5 new starters and possibly top 8-9 not even playing in Hilton (XF technically had limited run).
It is going to take time for them to jell but TJ's first team isn't anything like Prohm's last one and fans can now forget the 0-18 covid year. Thankfully.

What in the world does last year have to do with this upcoming year? Completely different coaching staff and outside of Conditt likely a completely different rotation. Stop being a debbie downer and pissing in everyone's cheerios. To say this team can compete for 6th or 7th in the Big 12 and perhaps be on the bubble is not out of question whatsoever.

I think their (valid) point is we have enough talent in the program now to have a chance to make the tournament, and it's great to be able to feel optimistic going into a season after experiencing the past two seasons.

Now, it is an absolute question mark (and likely unrealistic to set as an expectation to happen, which I think is your point) whether: (1) that talent can (in a short period of time) learn new offenses and defenses, gel as a team, strengthen their strengths and improve on their weaknesses, etc..., and (2) TJ can develop game plans and in-game adaptions that both take advantage of the team's strengths and exploit our opponents' weaknesses; well enough for the team to actually make the tournament.

In short, both sides make valid points.

I admit I missed the memo that everything is required to be polarizing.

2 years for Izaiah and Gabe correct?

Kalscheur I believe confirmed he plans on being here 2 years.

Brockington will be on his 5th year in college (4th year playing) next year so will be curious to see if he wants the extra year or not. Interesting that he's listed as a junior in his commitment edit.

2021/22 Big 12 season has 2 preseason top 10 teams (KU and BU) and 1 dang good team in UT. As long Ochai Agbaji and Jalen Wilson return, which it sounds is likely.

Rest of the league:
WV: McBride staying in the draft = rebuild mode in Morgantown. They need him back to make the dance
OSU: Anderson returning would put them at the top of the second tier
OU: New coach, mostly new starting lineup.. Groves addition was HUGE
Tech: Gutted minus McClung returning.
KSU: Really good PG but a bad coach on the hot seat. Make or break years usually end in a break
TCU: About the same as 2020/21
ISU: Top 7 players could all be new (Foster included)

THIS team was never 0-18. That's hugely important.
It's also important that a majority of the pieces are new and so is the man coaching. I understand that we were 0-18 bad, but with all of the new pieces, it's not even the same team. It's the same jersey and that's about it. There likely won't be one player starting for us next year that started last year, they will be role players instead.

remember when a lot of people were super mad that TJ didn't re-recruit one of Prohm's commits.....?

I had no problem with TJ not going after him. Nothing against the kid, he might turn out to be very good, but this is TJ's team, and he understands that the clock is ticking as far are getting things turned around. Maybe he thought the kid would take 2 years to get on the court and didn't want to wait that long. Last year's team was a complete train wreck, getting blown out in a lot of games. If they were not so bad, the kid looks more appealing.

Exactly. Steve Prohm was a loser. The kids on the team last year learned how to lose. The kids on THIS team don't have any idea what went on here last year and it's meaningless. There are essentially nine new players taking the court for us. Railing on "but we were 0-18 last year" is silly because "we" weren't, "they" were.

Yeah - for someone who was, I guess I'll say "cautiously pessimistic" (borrowed that phrase from the great Dan Carlin) about Coach Otzelberger coming in, he's done everything right so far. But the real proof is how the team is able to play together. So as far as I'm concerned the off season has been a 10/10. But, how the season will go is still in question. I just don't want to get my hopes up too high - after thinking that the 19/20 season would be at least an improvement on 18/19 based on some decent talent coming in I'm still taking a wait and see approach.

And even Matt Campbell had a bad first season here. You could see we were improving significantly week to week, but the change didn't happen all at once. Totally different sport, different roster situation, etc. But the attitude here in August before that first Campbell season was that we were getting back to a bowl game that year. Didn't happen that way, but it was still a good result. So maybe I'll change my evaluation of TJ to "cautiously optimistic" now.

This. We're a lot better than we were, but we were hideous.
We'll be watchable and competitive this year. That's a giant step that should be enough for anybody.

I think what has me most excited is that UNLV fans seemed more concerned about Otz's ability to recruit rather than his ability to coach. Whereas our concern is the other way around. I don't know what to expect this upcoming season but what I am seeing with Otz is the ability to adapt and to adapt fast.

Players:
Hunter, Kalscheur, Brockington, Hinson, Foster, Jaz and Enaruna are 7/8 players going to lead the team in minutes played. 6/7 have suited up for ISU and 1 barely played. Conditt is the only returning contributor.

How many starters for Prohm will barely see the court for Otz...

Coaches:
3 of the last 4 years have lead to 12+ wins for Otz in conference play. Prohm didn't even do that with Hoiberg's sweet 16 team in 2016

UNI was one of the best rebounding teams in the country thanks to Green's coaching of less skilled bigs than he'll have at ISU

Blount's teams at Drake at CSU never shot below 35% from 3. All of those teams were guard dominated and Blount is the guard coach responsible for that

If ISU can protect Hilton, lessen turnovers, shot 35% from 3 and have Green's rebounding. That's a recipe for a .500 team in conference which puts you in bubble contention..

At the end of day I really don't care about 2021/22. I REALLY care about making Des Moines or Omaha sites in March 2023 and March 2024

Fans should care less about 2021/22 and care more about getting to play in Des Moines or Omaha in 2023 and 2024
This is me. Going to just be watching for fun this year, and whatever happens happens. Obviously I'll be pissed if they don't attain double digit wins in total, with at least 3 conference wins, but for the most part just going to sit back, pop some popcorn and enjoy the show. No cardiac clones this year.

You think TJ will have them as a #2 or #3 seed I'm the NCAA tourney in less than 24 months? That's some lofty expectations that I think will be impossible.

Hoiberg was a 9 seed his 2nd year after he brought in all thst talent. If TJ can follow Hoibergs trajectory I'll be happy.

As far as next year, I don't think 7 wins is asking too much, and if things fall right I don't think 9-9 and being a bubble team is unreasonable. I'm not expecting NCAA but if that happens it will be a pleasant surprise.
