ISU vs. K State Game Thoughts

I’m talking about going for it vs kicking the FG. I personally would have kicked, but I’m glad they didn’t. Giving Johnson 2 minutes to drive and win the game against our secondary that was missing assignments? Not great.

If it's a different circumstance like KSU having 2 Time Outs or something I'm going for it but keeping it simple with a QB dive at least two downs if not 3.

A FG doesn't do anything since KSU's response has to be a TD or nothing.

Would it be odd if ISU came out with 4 DL? Yes, it was different from what they ran all last year so the coaches didn’t think they would overhaul their scheme this year most likely.
Fair. I just think it would be difficult to keep it a secret. With all the press access to the schools and all.

The math was there to win by kneeling. You do that every time.
Yep. If you are ahead on the scoreboard and can hold the ball until the clock reads 0:00 you cannot lose the game. If you score and give the ball back up 10 with a couple minutes left, you may never have possession again and can possibly lose the game. Pretty simple really!

Iowa State and KSU are very very close talent wise. KSU had 17 transfer portal additions this past year and I think that large amount of turnover showed. Iowa State was just a little more polished in the ways the matter. What we used to call the margins a few years ago?

ISU is still developing players in house. KSU sought to go out an buy them, being in the top 20 in transfer portal additions last year. There are other programs in this league who are attempting to do the same, we will see how that goes for them. In an early season matchup like this, it was advantage ISU.

1st and goal inside the 1 yard line with 2 minutes and 18 seconds remaining.

Campbell made the classy (and correct) decision to just go into victory formation rather than beating KState by 10. I wonder what percentage of coaches would have done the same thing.
95% or so. There's only a handful of jerks, or idiots, that would have.

The amount of fans already writing off our transfer WR’s is astounding. Not just here but on X as well
I agree. It was reported that both were dinged up in camp and we saw little or no highlights of them in recent scrimmages, so it is likely going to take them a little longer than normal. Thank goodness we have a couple of young studs that could step up.

It's easy to say our OL "blocked better" in the second half, and while there is probably some truth to that, I think the combo of making adjustments at halftime and leaning more on Hansen played a huge part. He just seems to follow blocks and attack the hole so much better than Sama does.

Was Flora going to be the kickoff and punt returner all along.... or would it have been Townsend if he was 100% healthy?

Flora did a great job back there and deserves to be there... I was just curious.

It sounded like the OL did make some adjustments.... as well as just the entire offense according to Rocco. He mentioned it took them a little while to figure out what KSU was doing defensively and then to get into the right playcalls to counter that.

I think it was believed to be his

My take? First half was a mess environmentally. First two sacks were the tackles getting eaten alive. Rocco was jittery in the first half and his passing and that bad pitch to Sama were illustrative. Skip to second half and everything smoothed out. Two freshmen mistakes on D kept KSU in this one, but that’s what good teams do.

Are you saying that we did not know they were going to use 4DL? That would be odd IMO.
Do you think it would be odd if Heacock came out in a four man front first game, and no one knew?

How would they find out? Serious question. Klieman is no different from Campbell.

KState even listed their two deep as a three man front.

(We listed ours as four, so only fair)

Do I want to score another TD at the end to stick it to the cats? Absolutely. Have I watched ISU football to know that something terrible could happen if we try? You bet. Take the knee!

Overall great first win, KSU has been playing a 3 man front in the past, so switching over to blocking against a 4 man front was going to take some adjustments, which ISU made. At least two of the sack, one of which caused a fumble was because the guard stayed with the tackle as he went to the outside, and then a KSU player that was wide, looped back inside to the open gap. That has to be cleaned up as EIU will loop their Tackles and D ends a lot.

Still hate our 3 man front, we did a very good job against the rush, but were giving up way to much ground for their WRs and TEs to just go 10 to 15 yards down the field with no one around them, makes an easy throw for the QB. Pressure is the key, without it, an average QB will pick you apart and a great one will kill you.
We also got into a pattern yesterday of rushing it on first down, into a loaded box of 7 to 8 KSU defenders, would love to see us check out of a running play there and hit a back with a short pass out of the backfield, like he did with Hansen to seal the game. Rocco is at a point in his career and the coaches just have to trust him to make the correct call and not run the ball into a loaded box.

All in, I thought it was really good for game 1. Mouser was really good I thought except for the horrible pitch play at the goal line and there was one series we went three and out on 3 pass plays, but overall he did a great job.

Lot of national people bitchibg about sloppiness. But it’s totally unfair to think these teams are going to be in mid season form in August. But every week 1 game will have this kind of stuff. Let alone in a driving rainstorm.

Plus, we had 1 penalty, which is crazy for week 1.

That’s not really true. A FG basically takes OT off the table. KSU couldn’t drive and kick a FG to tie. They would need a TD to win.

Not saying it was the wrong call at all, but it’s not a no brainer decision.

The only way we could lose in that spot is to give the ball back to K State. If we score a TD in that spot, K State has an opportunity to score a TD and then recover an onside kick and score again. It is a very slim chance but a chance. If we take a knee like we did, they have 0 chance. They need the ball to score.
Technically, we could fumble the snap while trying to take a knee. I don't know if a team has ever lost a game in that scenario though. Probably not.
