ISU vs. K State Game Thoughts

Hate never dies.

And, frankly, we had it won. Why even risk it?

It did make the under hit though, so there’s that.
I’m talking about going for it vs kicking the FG. I personally would have kicked, but I’m glad they didn’t. Giving Johnson 2 minutes to drive and win the game against our secondary that was missing assignments? Not great.

One guy that really stood out for me today (other than the obvious Eskildsen) was Ezeogu. It wasn’t just that batted down ball. He was a tough dude that seemed to get to the right spot to stop some runs that could’ve gone for more. I’m a big fan of him.

I’m really hoping yesterday was not an indication of these two transfer receivers. Townsend was non existent and Sowell was either slipping or dropping a catch whenever he had an opportunity. The good part is our tight end game was incredible all game, but we are going to need something from Townsend and Sowell.

Rocco was difficult to watch in the first half. He looked nervous early on. When it comes down to it, despite his bad play in the first half, he was a monster in the second half. Take away that fumble on the pitch in the first quarter and he sneaks it in instead, this game wouldn’t have been all that close in the second half. Avery Johnson’s one touchdown was because our secondary went for the interception instead of covering the receiver. My guess is if everyone didn’t try to pick that off, and stayed on the receiver, it would’ve been incomplete. It’s encouraging to know that if that fumble pitch hadn’t happened and the secondary collapse on the touchdown hadn’t happened, this game would have been a 31-14 super comfortable win.

Hoping the receivers come alive against South Dakota and gain some confidence. Defense was just flat out very good.

Also, Avery Johnson is mid. The preseason hype I just don’t understand. One commentator said he’s Heisman material and I just don’t see it. My guess is he ends up as the 6th or 7th best quarterback in the conference this year.

Hope we see more of the 2nd half OL than the first half OL. It's pretty confusing how they were so much better after halftime, but I'm not complaining!

When we only rush 3 Dlinemen against 5 Olinemen, it's unrealistic to expect them to get sacks. That is, unless we have a freak NFL 1st round draft pick like Will McDonald on the Dline, and those guys are pretty rare.

The whole purpose of defense is to prevent the other team from scoring, and every year John Heacock's defense ranks at or near the top of the conference in this statistic. Our sacks typically must come from a blitzing linebacker or secondary, and the beauty of our defense is the QB usually has no idea where our blitz is coming from.

I admit it can be aggravating to watch the other team's QB have all day to throw the ball on certain plays, but he's taking all day because he's staring at 8 pass defenders.

In short, although sacks are fun to watch, they're not a high priority in our defense. Stopping the other team from scoring is.
Very good explanation of the 3 man DL and 8 deep pass defenders. Would add that this type of D needs 6 or 7 rotational lineman to use against a team that is going to the pass on 3rd down or is behind and running out of time.

Campbell said something that last year K-State used 3 DL and switched to 4 DL this year. It must’ve taken a half to adjust our blocking scheme to account for the change.

I dismiss 1st half play for two reasons: normal jitters and inexact execution of first game going against true game speed and then add not just wet conditions but hard rain. I’ll grant the call for the pitch play to Abu was best kept back in the OC’s back pocket. Rocco gets more out of his talent level because he makes the right decisions under duress which separates D-2 QB’s. One penalty which wasn’t a penalty under the sloppy conditions is a testament to this staff and players. Probably the prime thing I take out of this game, we were prepared. KSU’s penalties killed some positive plays at crucial times.

1st and goal inside the 1 yard line with 2 minutes and 18 seconds remaining.

Campbell made the classy (and correct) decision to just go into victory formation rather than beating KState by 10. I wonder what percentage of coaches would have done the same thing.
The only way we could lose in that spot is to give the ball back to K State. If we score a TD in that spot, K State has an opportunity to score a TD and then recover an onside kick and score again. It is a very slim chance but a chance. If we take a knee like we did, they have 0 chance. They need the ball to score.

I give you KSU/ISU 2015 as a prime example of doing the less risky thing to get off the field with a win.

I was thinking they may have had a hard time with their footing because of the wet field. I might be wrong, but once the field started to dry up they were phenomenal.

KSU clearly keyed on stopping that short toss after seeing how successful it was for us late last season. I don’t think it would’ve worked had Hansen been in but 1) Sama has to catch that and 2) Rocco fired that in there like a bullet rugby pass and deserves some of the blame, that’s a tough catch at that speed and height with a wet ball.
I agree, that came at Sama really fast and hard. Rocco also needs to work on putting a little touch on short routes. He fired a couple of rockets at guys yesterday. One was a 3rd and 3 I think, the reciever ran what looked like close to a 3 yard route and Rocco threw to hard and fast it would have been dificult for the reciever to catch that. With that said, it was just the first game so that is correctable and the great thing about Rocco is he is a winner, he seems to make the big plays when the game is on line.

How is it confusing?

KSU's DL is touted as being really good and the running game can take a while to work itself out.

Haven't seen much talk of this, but Campbell mentioned it in the post-game. Sounds like we fully expected them to come out with a 3-down linemen defense and then surprising us with a 4-down one could have thrown off the offense for the first half. Especially the o-line after all the preparation and recognizing assignments was based off a 3-down defensive formation. Just a thought. Shows how good we are at in-game adjustments.

Does anyone know more about this. Did we have any indication that they were going to come out in a new defense?

Are you saying that we did not know they were going to use 4DL? That would be odd IMO.

Edit. Always a chance with the clock not showing 0:00

Logically, sure.
But man - didn't you REALLY want em to tack on an F U touchdown?
