ISU News and Tweets

Maybe this guy was just stirring up the pot for clicks, but it was nice to see a reseed that wasn't just a blue blood ranking
There was a guy on Facebook that thought that the tournament was ACTUALLY reseeded because he read an article were someone "reseeded" the Sweet 16. He then was calling people idiots when we told him that was not the case.

Should the ball slam at 4:12ish have been a T?
Anyone else remembering Acie Earl kicking the ball right before halftime when they played Iowa State at Carver? For some reason I remember that, and no technical foul was called then, either.

Miami has poorly guarded the midrange this year.

i've heard that said several times - from watching some highlights, they seem to be okay at running people off the 3-pt line at time (although opponents have gotten hot - they've given up 8+ 3s 14 times), but they then meet them in the lane, with poor close outs in the mid range.

That said - the data doesn't especially back that up. Haslametrics (a site I love) tracks mid-range percentage and near-range percentage. For Miami-
They are very average allowing 32% on 3-pt shots (147th) and are below average allowing 39% of shots from deep

They are above average allowing 35% on mid-range shots (81st) and above average in limiting mid-range shots

They are very poor in allowing near-range shots (63%) and average in allowing over 28% of shots from near range. This is where their defense really struggles.

So given that, I'd love to see Hunter and IB being aggressive getting to the rim.

I wanna say thanks for showing the site, too. I haven't found many that accurately track these kinds of things so I'm excited to look around on there.

ISU is ranked about where I expected before I started reading, although I think that team could compete well with most of teams below maybe 7th ... I didn't ponder the rank too closely, quick read-thru -- possibly could place us above Providence but some of those players are prior to my memory.
Problem with that is it doesn't really factor in the next guys in. A little Cato, Haliburton, etc... and maybe we do rise above that next group of teams

It's interesting how so many people, including the "experts" in the studio, blamed Wisconsin's loss on an injury to a freshman point guard who in 14 minutes had 0 points, 0 assists, and at least 1 turnover.
For the record he was 0-3 (0-2 from 3), with 2 rebounds, 0 assists and 2 turnovers when he went down. I don't know for sure, but I believe Wisky had close to their season game average of turnovers as a team by that point as well.

you are picking me apart on this :)

To be fair, they could have called it on someone else, but Kunc was right there. Anybody have a link to the game that I can go back and research? I can only find find a condensed game on the march madness site.
They called a foul on Wisky away from the ball just as Grill was teeing up his shot. They said the foul was before the shot so ISU took the ball out of bounds after the media time out. But yes, it did take a made 3 off the board.

Read the play by play for when a foul and a turnover occurred the same time. Here are our offensive fouls
1st half
15:39 brockington drawn by Davison
13:40 Robert jones drawn by Hepburn
9:04 brockington drawn by Davison
0:44 conditt drawn by Davis
2nd half
15:09 conditt drawn by Davison

I had this sense, but hadn't tracked down the numbers - we really do win or lose entirely depending on whether we make more 3s than the other team.

We are 20-2 when making more 3-pt shots than our opponents (losses @OU and @TTU)
We are 2-10 when making the same or fewer 3-pt shots (wins Alabama St and Memphis)

I looked at Miami, and that trend does NOT apply:
Miami is 10-5 when making more 3-pt shots than their opponents
But is 15-5 when making the same or fewer 3-pt shots

I know that Fred hated the mid-range shot, but if you shoot 32% from 3-pt line (and are 268th in the nation), the mid-range is probably a better option.
Only if you exceed 48% from the midrange and if rebounding the miss remains the same.

Missed threes often lead to rebounds further from the hoop which are slightly easier for the offense to get if they can pin the defender in closer.

That said, I like our midrange game. Last couple of games it has probably exceeded are within five feet game
