***Iowa Pregame Thread***

I low key hate that Gronowski played like butt yesterday. He's going to want to atone for that and set the world on fire and he knows there's no better time than against a rival on national TV.

That said, I think we are a far superior team this year and we are due to win at the Jack by about 17.
The same guy that said he couldn’t control his breathing or anxiety in like his 60th career game? Yeah I’m not worried about him. He doesn’t have that dawg in him.

I know this is dangerous to say here, and easy for me as I live out of state where literally nobody cares about Iowa and I won't have to deal with that awful fan base. But this game, as far as what we want to accomplish this year, is probably one of the three least important games. It's not a conf game, and we will have to win the Big 12 title game to get to the playoff most likely.

Now longer term, for recruiting, fan support and those things yes it's important, but for this year, come November, I won't care who won this game.

That said, I really really hope our guys kick their a$$es.

Yeah, if he's going to get back in the Heisman race, for sure.

I think we’ll win, but I’m going to pee in our Cheerios a little bit.

Do we know if we’ve beaten anybody who’s any good yet? We think K-State’s performance against North Dakota was just a letdown after losing to us in Ireland, but what if they’re a 6-6 kind of team? We think South Dakota is one of the best teams in FCS, but what if, after all their losses to the portal, they aren’t even a playoff team?

This was the second game in a row where the pass defense didn’t look great. Things tightened up after the game got out of hand, but for a while there in the first half it felt like South Dakota was moving the ball at will through the air. We still don’t have any sacks. With Iowa’s struggles passing the ball, you’d like to think we could commit to stopping the run and make whoever their QB is try to beat us through the air, but I’d feel a whole lot more comfortable if we were getting to the QB. If it’s a low scoring game, a big play or two could be the difference.

I still have some concerns about our offense. Carson Hansen had 9 rushes for 19 yards against a rebuilt FCS defense. Dylan Lee looked good but it was all in garbage time. Our TE’s have been excellent, but we still need more production from our WRs at some point.

Again, I like ISU to beat Iowa, but I’m expecting it to be a nail biter.
I think all your comments are fair and valid, but I'll debate your point about QB sacks. Which do you want, we get more pressure on the QB or we flood the passing lanes with 8 defenders? Because you can't have both now that Will McDonald is in the NFL.

We just held one of the top FCS QB's to 15/29, 126 yards, 1 TD, and 2 Interceptions. The top priority of a defense is to prevent the other team from scoring, not to sack their QB, and we gave up a grand total of 7 points.

I share your concern that we might be getting a little bit of fools gold. I believe in the saying that you're never as good as you think you are after a big win, so we haven't arrived yet by any means. But I do think we've got 2 huge things going for us.

1. There's no better coach than Matt Campbell when it comes to preventing players from getting big heads. We just won a "trap game" 55-7.

2. The difference between a great season and a disappointing season is the ability to win close games. Right now, Iowa State's record for winning close games is outstanding.

The 11am slot next saturday is bare bones aside from our game. Should get a good audience, a win would be great for us and the B12

We are gonna piss pound Iowa this year. Book it.
I admire your optimism but I haven’t reached that point. Hanson is our pounder and he was just ok against SD. Giving Rocco time in the pocket & then his improvisation if flushed will be important.

I agree. Our run game will struggle against Iowa. We will need to throw the ball early and often. If Rocco can avoid turnovers I think we win handily. If he cannot, it’s gonna be a tough game. That Iowa bruising style run game always seems tougher to stop after a turnover.

Iowa will control the time of possession. Having depth at D-line and LBs should help to rotate guys.

I expect this team will elevate their play even more against Iowa. We seem very businesslike and we are improving. Our safeties are getting more experience. I also liked getting Townsend involved this week. We have a lot of balance in our offense right now.

Iowa was shockingly bad yesterday. Even on defense they weren't impressive. This one is going to get ugly quickly.
Maybe it's just the Cyclone PTSD I have but I remember an ISU team losing to Kent State and UNI at home and then beating Iowa the next week. I'd be leery about judging too much about the way a team plays the previous week(s) in this rivalry game.

It could play a role in ISU making the CFP if we lose the conf title game, but that is an long shot scenario. Unlikely that the big 12 gets two bids, and for this scenario to play out, the conf title game would have to be our only loss.

Otherwise, you are right. This game has never mattered less to us, on paper, than it does this year.

I am always in for good Hawkeye marching band humor.

I mean, you know they’re going to get bull headed, take a wrong turn, and wind up in RV Village, right?

I mean, just picture how in two years, they wind up at the stage in CyTown!
