The game plans are made by all the coaches on that side of the ball. Sturdy has had some influence on every game plan since last season.
You guys do realize that Arnaud was a pretty decent QB. The problem was that he was a pro-style QB being forced to play in a spread system and 3 different OC's. He wasn't built to play a spread offense. No speed or illusiveness. Very strong arm but made to play in a system he wasn't built for.
This seems to be a theme on offense. Our offense would be much better if the COACHES adjusted to the players/talent that they have.
Example: Throwing a WR screen 35 yards across the field to a receiver that is standing still when your QB doesn't have a cannon. It takes too long for the ball to get there, D is playing man coverage, ball thrown to a WR that doesn't have big play speed = 2 yard loss to 2 yard gain at best.
Example: Throwing inside WR screens to a 5'5" WR when the D is blitzing the middle = no chance for success (Iowa 4th & 4)
Example: Running Woody to the outside on a sweep play = fail
I guess my point is you can't force players to do things they aren't able to do. Coaches need to adapt to the players' strengths.

He has been a solid QB. That's it. After two years of Jantz and Barnett, he's been a much better option.

Austin definitely suffered through the coaching changes. With a single coaching staff, he would be in the NFL today. I have always maintained that his best coach at ISU was Chizik's QB coach, Tony Peterson, now the OC at LA Tech:

2008 was Austin's best year statistically, though obviously not for the team as a whole. Tony was a hidden gem on Glen Mason's staff at Minnesota, where they primarily emphasized the run, before coming to Ames. I had hopes Rhoads would try to keep Tony, but Tom Herman ended up doubling as the OC and QB coach.
Agreed. It would have been hard for any QB to be successful with that much diversity and change in such a short period.

Thank you for posting this. I was gonna post this a couple days ago, but did not get online. Just over 3,000 yards and 28 TDs is what he is on pace for. Would be some big numbers if he can do it, and is only on pace to throw 12 ints. If Sam stays healthy, he could break some season AND career records. Lets just hope he keeps improving. Next year he will have a bunch of weapons at WR!!

This just crossed my mind. Assuming Lazard stays commited to ISU, what are the chances of him redshirting? We return Jarvis (will be a SR next year), Ecby and Bundrage who are both having solid Soph. campaigns, we will have Montgomery who could be a huge piece to this offense. We will have Daley and PJ Harris, who are both very young and have some potential. We only lose Albert Gary this year. I know this is a long time from now, but we will have solid depth with or without Lazard in the lineup.

Sorry, we lose Justin Coleman, too... I have heard good things about Bryan Ajumobi (true freshman who is redshirting) as well.

BTW, Arnaud threw for 2798 yds in 2008 and Meyer threw for 2876 in 2005. Those are the only 2 times we have had anyone near 3000 in the last decade.
No. Lazard is already the best receiver and he's still a HS senior. Our receiver group is filled with role players but not a single true star receiver.
I think our coaches call plays apart from the players that are in the game, of course with the exception of Woody at the goal-line. They send players in and then call plays, as if the players are replaceable parts. Never seemed to make sense to me.
