They did play in the Rose bowl in 07(?) vs USC, and got hosed in the title game against UNC in basketball in 05. So I wouldnt call that a non factor per say.

That was late 80s. They had one really good year in the early 2000s (?) but have been bad for a while. Late 80s/Early 90s they were solid. Bball's been good there.
