Hunter Dekkers Concerns?

The offense was conservative because that’s the type of QB we had. Our best players were also a RB and TE.

The Dekkers passing game will be more WR’s and some deeper throws.

Sometimes talent has been the problem but far too often that wasn't the case. Special teams are a facet any given team, regardless of conference, can excel in. Too many of our losses have been due (or largely due) to being a joke on special teams.
I would say Purdy was good at what he did but he held the offense back. We have talent. The special teams crap is unacceptable.

They fking ruined two Game Day home games. We owe them big. Lets hope Dekkers can make them pay.

I wonder if culturally if our program has the right mindset for this game? After Dan got us going, we either beat Iowa or played them tough. Dan went 6-3 against them in his last 9 years and lost close ones against them in 2004 and 2006. Even in losses we even ran the ball agains them under McCarney. He had our guys come out and play with their hair on fire, you could see it and feel it. Even Pauls teams were pretty much ready for Iowa after his first couple of years. But Paul and Dan are Iowa guys, I think they get the rivalry on a different level than possibly CMC. Kirk struggled with this rivalry, he was accused of not caring about it and focusing on the Big 10 by his fans much like CMC. After 2014, the Iowa staff put a major emphasis on this game (Iowa fans won't admit this). They have been super focused and ready to play. That is evident in that they. haven't. made any mistakes, no turnovers and no special teams gaffs. We on the other hand have had plenty of turnovers and special teams fk ups during this losing streak.

After seeing that clip of McCarney at practice this yr, Campbell should invite him back to do the pregame speech for the Iowa game.

Defenses have also learned how to game the "substitution opportunity" rule to the point that offenses are being forced to burn TOs or take delay penalties.
This is very true. The rule needs to be tweaked so if a defense is slowly subbing late in the play clock the referee resets the play clock.

Gundy is a master at making offenses pay for any substitutions that don't happen immediately after the previous play.

Most wins against Iowa have been when the teams were even or Iowa was bad/overrated.

The same could be said from the other perspective.

Only 8 times out of 44 games did the winning team finish the season with a worse record than the losing team. And 2 of those were within 1 game:

2014 (-5) - ISU (2-10), UI (7-6)
2002 (-4) - ISU (7-7), UI (11-2)
1982 (-4) - ISU (4-6-1), UI (8-4)
1977 (-3) - UI (5-6), ISU (8-4)
1981 (-3) - ISU (5-5-1), UI (8-4)
2007 (-3) - ISU (3-9), UI (6-6)
1989 (-1) - UI (5-6), ISU (6-5)
2011 (-1) - ISU (6-7), UI (7-6)

This will tell you how old I am. I have watched Iowa State football for 53 years this coming season. Who does Hunter Dekkers resemble ? In my opinion, his style and throwing mechanics reminds me of Sonny Jurgensen.
I'm old enough to remember him in his later career, but don't really. Games just weren't televised and hyped / on as much back then. He does seem to have a great arm (Jurgensen), so any comparison to him is a compliment, for sure.

And just think, Dekkers is 6'3"! Jurgensen was only 5'11".

I could see this being our best team under CMC. If the offensive line is good this team could be a sleeper to win the Big 12.
Pass that bottle brother! :)
How about you Jack***'s lay off the young man. We have a team full of newbe's, but it all falls to the QB? Let's just hope we don't have to score 50+ to win. Now there is something to really worry about. Insiders are saying Rocco is not ready. Doesn't know the book - to small - to slow - team has no confidence in him yet.
It really is a different era, isn't it? I may be assuming incorrectly that you were wishing it was pre-internet fan discussion board days? Sometimes I wish that. If so yeah, those days are gone. You are probably much younger than I.

The barn door is wide open. People are gonna talk about whatever they want. I'm getting used to it. I guess if you're not interested in a topic, don't click onto the thread. Speaking to people in general, not you or this particular thread.

I can sure see why coaches more than likely tell their players not to listen to any fan board stuff during their playing days. I'm sure not all players abide in that advice.

Fans are going to do and say what they want these days. I don't think we can stop it.

Dekkers already played in a Cy-Hawk game and had he not thrown the interception right away, we could have won the game with him.
Dekkers only interception came against Oklahoma.

Against Iowa he was 11-16 for 114 yards and 1 TD.
Yeah, it wasn’t a pick. It was two 3-and-outs to start the 4th.
Glad you have that straightened out. Mr. Humility. No "my bad" or "that was wrong for me to say, thanks for clarifying my error."

Sheesh.

I know fall camp has just started, but would love to know what some of y’all have been hearing in terms of players to watch for, potential breakout players, younger guys who may step up for this years squad (i.e. not public knowledge like Noel, Freyler, Purchase and Verdon lol) etc… Given the nature of this team and how open some positions are, there is tons to talk about! So let’s do it.

Here are some younger guys who aren't getting talked about that I am interested in for this season:

Offense -
WR Daniel Jackson
WR Greg Gaines
WR Jason Essex
RB Cartevious Norton

Defnse -
DL Domonique Orange
DL Ikenna Ezeogu
DB Trevon Howard

Would love to hear any thoughts y'all have or if you have heard anything about these guys or others in the program!

Great question. I'm not sure this question is best in the H. Dekkers thread, so I'll respond here.

I am not as familiar with the team, so I rely on what others think. I think It might be a good year though. Without specifics on players, our teams' success will again parallel the success we might have with the offensive line, as others have said repeatedly.

Beyond that, we need to continue our defensive tradition of the past few years, maybe even improve on it (getting more turnovers, not giving up big plays on 3rd down, etc.). Be sloid in ST's, kicks, punts, coverage. I'm hopeful our run game will continue to be a big positive. It will definitely be different now with Breece gone.

I will of course, default to the obvious, QB play. It's very possible this, Hunter's play, along with our receiving core, could be a huge plus for us. I hope so.

For sure it is going to be a different team, but exciting for many reasons. Hope it turns out great! At the very least, I hope for another solid Bowl game at the end.

Is it just me, or have I seen this post on other threads?

Yup! I posted it in a couple other cyclone football related threads. Didn't know it was a crime to post a common, intriguing, football-minded question about cyclone football on the... wait for it... Cyclone Fanatic Football forums. I should be ashamed of myself! :(

I mean posting the exact same thing in three different threads is bot/troll kind of stuff.

Don't worry about it. It's OK.

But everybody else got taller too over the last 50 years.
