Hunter Dekkers Concerns?

I have a hard time buying that Campbell played a clearly-inferior guy just because of seniority, when for every other position on the field (and his own general mantra of the team), he plays solely the best player available at the position. QB is quite literally the worst possible position to be holding back talent from. That just goes against everything else we see him do.
Dekkers might have been looking better in practice, but Purdy had lots of experience, strong leadership and the trust of the coaches. Purdy was playing well enough that he didn't deserve to be benched.

How about you Jack***'s lay off the young man. We have a team full of newbe's, but it all falls to the QB? Let's just hope we don't have to score 50+ to win. Now there is something to really worry about. Insiders are saying Rocco is not ready. Doesn't know the book - to small - to slow - team has no confidence in him yet.

I knew a couple of guys on the team last year and what they told me about Dekkers aligns with what @CoachHines3 was saying. Dekkers was right up there with Purdy but there was absolutely no reason why Brock wouldn't have started. He was just coming off a Big 12 Championship run and a Fiesta Bowl win, and the offense / play style that we ran fit more into Brock's strengths (shorter throws, managing the game, get the ball into Hall's hands, 2-3 TE sets, etc.)

Dekkers has arm strength that Purdy just didn't have. Will the accuracy come with that? We're obviously hopeful, but even if it does Dekkers is still going to be a little green. He'll have to learn on the job and that's okay. The good thing is that he's going to have a very good receiving core, a solid OL, and a stout defense.

The 3-3-5 can evolve.

There has been some hype this summer about the talent among the DB's. Does that lead to breakups, deflections & interceptions. It also sounded like they wanted to play varied coverages to confuse opponent QB's.

But in the end, the best way to making QB's uncomfortable is getting defenders in their face. I gotta believe the staff convinced McDonald to come back with a plan to make him an elite college talent. Is that playing some LB so he can be a 4 down player? Or rush from different spots.

The challenge for our defense is to not allow games from last year like WVU and TT.
I could talk about this for hours. I love defensive schemes and strategy.

Hi Hunter's Dad and/or Mom.

That wasn't a QB competition. Kempt only started because Park self destructed.
Park self destructed. For what exact reason and what was said will forever remain behind closed doors. That's when Kempt got the nod, when I think the only other scholarship QB on roster was Zeb.

All I was getting at was that the staff is rarely transparent, if ever.

Other than maybe Seneca... might Dekkers be the most - from a pure physical tool set - the most purely talented QB behind Seneca? Sage was great but I don't know if he was physically talented. Similar with Bret.
Don't forget about Steele Jantz's balls. We're talking physical tools right?

wait what? I don't see anyone bagging on Dekkers. We are all excited about him but are aware early in they year he may struggle some because of lack of experience. Going into Iowa City for the second game with that crowd right on top of you and the pressure of a rivalry game is going to be a tough deal for him.

I am hoping Hunter is the type of kid who approaches the Cy-Hawk game with some fervor and urgency. The type of in-state kid that is gonna take a game like this personally, and not just treat it like another game. It has been a long time since we've seen an ISU team have that kind of mentality about this game. What Campbell has done for the overall culture of the program can't be understated, but I'd like him to get the monkey off his back finally this season.

With Hunter, I could see it going either way. Either we do see that passion and excitement about playing in the Cy-Hawk game, or we see him turtle up and just go through the motions until the final buzzer, kind of like last years team did. He grew up a Hawkeye fan, but that seems irrelevant at this point.

Iowa's achilles heel has always been the vertical passing game and that's why Purdue has had great success over the years even though their team's overall haven't been that good. The last two times we've had success on offense against Iowa was in 2017 where Park was slinging it down the field and then in 2019 where Iowa gave up two long TD passes.

Our team this year is not going to go to many 2-3 TE sets. We're going to see guys spread out more and with Dekker's arm strength, we're going to try and take the top off the defense more. That doesn't mean we're going to throw for 400+ yards but stretching Iowa's defense out won't allow them to stack the box the entire game to stop our RB's and TE's like they did last year which was ultimately our downfall.

If you ask a hawkeye they will tell you that they think (rather they know) they have the DBs to shut down the over the top game and take the ball away. It will be interesting to see it play out. Let's hope they give Hunter the chance to test defenses deep.

For me, I expect a backwards move to avoid disappointment and hope to be proven wrong. WR corps should be better but with a TE group exit, the offense won’t look anywhere close to what we are used to seeing the last 3 years.

After seeing the few he did throw I'm looking forward to what the prospect has to offer. Looked like he had a rifle. Probably will have some accuracy issues, but who doesnt at that spot on our team. I'm hoping he pans out nicely :)
