How the Hawks Outplayed Us

Lots of chest puffing in this thread. Iowa looked like the better team for most of the night. Fact. Lots of insecure fans in this thread can't admit that.

Yes because Iowa shot the ball better and had more bench point. I'm so impressed with McCabe, Stokes, Olaseni, Jok, and Clemmons scoring 6 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 turnovers, and 8 fouls in 48 minutes.

Better team won.

Iowa played better early. We played better down the stretch. Everytime Iowa got a big lead, we cut it back down to 2-3, then they would go back up again. Basketball is a game of runs, and everytime each team would go on a run, the other would respond. Just because Iowa had the largest lead of the game doesn't mean they outplayed us for the whole game, they outplayed us for a couple minutes stretch that allowed them to get a large lead, we then outplayed them for the next couple minutes to gain it back.

If that's "outplaying for most of the game", then I want some of whatever the Hawk faithful are taking...

Now that being said, Iowa did kill us in transition, we gave Woodbury too many easy offensive rebounds, need to make more FTs, and defend the backdoor cuts better. The team certainly has things to work on, and Fred will keep pushing them to get better, but saying that a team we just beat "looked better for most of the night" even when our guys kept battling back to make it close is just foolish.

Fred said in the postgame that the game plan was to foul before they got a 3 point shot off. Oops.

At no point tho did they even remotely look like they wanted to foul. I still say it was some sorta zone, or a complete lack of communication. There weren't any Is St players chasing Iowa guys. Just seemed to be defending their space.

And yes Kane did a terrible job fighting thru the screen , but it was a real good screen. I was more disappointed there was no one around to pop out and contest, especially since there was no reason to defend the paint.

Iowa outplayed us in all but three facets - putting ISU away, the final two minutes, and the final score.

I don't feel guilty about saying this or how we won at all. Conversely, I think it speaks to the character of this team - to be outplayed by an opponent and still find a way to win.

I don't understand why people don't want to admit this even when CFH is saying the exact same thing.

Great game, great win; lots of positives (NIANG!!). Not to be a negative Nancy, but three things stick out to me on the poor side last night.

Two of them, poor transition D (Ejim?) and poor FT shooting are obvious. Who exactly was supposed to be guarding White all night? Was it Ejim?

The third was how exactly did McCabe get such a wide open look at the tying 3? Don't recall exactly who was on the floor for Iowa on the last play, but the guys we should have been on like glue were McCabe, Uthoff, and Gessell. McCabe and Uthoff should have been easy. McCabe got as good a look as you could ever hope for.
Either Kane or Ejim should have been on McCabe for that last shot; Kane got stuck behind a screen down low (and honestly didn't look to be fighting through it very hard) and Ejim was near the top of the key and made an attempt to contest the shot but couldn't make it very close. Not sure whose responsibility it was.

But up 3 with 10 s left or whatever it was not really sure why Kane was even down by the block. Who cares if they get a layup at that point?

As the architect stated...Fred flat out said in the postgame they were supposed to foul on that play so his thoughts were that the wings didn't get out there because they assumed they would have fouled already.

The better team in those 40 minutes wins the game. How else could you possibly measure better team other than the score on the scoreboard?

This does not apply for a season-long determination, obviously. But on Friday night, Iowa State was better than Iowa. Why? Because they won. That's how it works.

Right but don't you want to see us win games with authority and finesse? Obviously from one perspective the bottom line is all that matters. But do you think CFH is going to go into the locker room and into practice this week and say 'great job guys- we won so we are better than them. We don't need to work on anything.' Basically the fact that we won last night is somewhat of an anomaly. I cannot wait to see our game flow against solid conference competition! Obviously it didn't flow last night.

Well Crap - what a bummer. I went to bed last night feeling great about a Cyclone win. Now I read this thread and realize that while we won the scoreboard, Hawkeyes learned they have the better team.

Bull **** - What am I missing:

Besides Scoreboard:

1) Shooting % -we shot 47%, they shot 46 %
2) 3 Pt % - we shot 35%, they shot 25 %
3) Assists - 19 for both teams
4) Turnovers - 10 for us, 11 for them
5) FT % - 63% for us 67% for them
6) Rebounds - 35 for us 49 for them.

Putting in context that we shot 7 more free throws and that our 6 more FT misses lead to 6 more rebounds for them and the fact that they only got 1 more second chance point than we did as a result of those rebounds.

Individually - White had a great stat line but didn't run away from Melvin or Georges stat line. I would take our 3 top stat lines:

22 Pts 7 reb 24 Pts 2 Reb 12 pts 16 rebs

over their top 3

25 pts 17 reb 19 pts 3 Reb 12 pts 5 rebs

Or at least call that a push

As for Kane - if he is operating as point guard, I will take his 9 assists and 1 turnover every night and accept his 5 pts.

And what sealed it for me - Two of their studs - Marbel and Gessel - step up to FT line to win\keep them in game - and clank. Two of our studs - Niang and Hogue - step up to FT to pull us through - 80%.

So what am I missing? Numbers are all close and we have scoreboard. We won a close game between two closely talented teams. I would play them 10 time, set the over\under at 5 and I will take the over any day.

I think we drank a bit too much koolaid and expect everything to fall into place nicely. Get used to winning ugly, better than losing pretty.

Great post.

I'm not even gonna read this drivel. Iowa couldn't make a shot to save there life in the final 2 minutes. How the **** does that qualify as outplaying an opponent? Especially when the opponent goes on a 8-0 run.

The better team won. Now STFU and GTFO.

you and all the people like you really lack nuance in your thinking. If you still don't comprehend what most people here seem to understand then check out the head coach's comments in the postgame interview.

Why are you doing this?
It's makes no ******* sense.
There are plenty of forums around to blather about "We're better but we lost".

Elaborate on the part of the night where they didn't look like the better team and it's importance to the outcome.
I'll hang up and listen.

Iowa definitely didn't take full advantage of how poorly we played in the first half. When ISU cranked up the defensive pressure in the 2nd most of the easy baskets for the Hawks disappeared.

Hawks will need to learn how to finish or they won't reach their full potential this season. They've got enough talent to be top 4 in the B1G. They've gotta earn it though.

That's what we call "Coachspeak". Coaches do it all the time.

What do you think Fred is going to say - "Yea, we had them right where we wanted them and they choked on their free throws"? We could have beat them by 20 and he would have worshiped them. Don't believe that, listen to his response to Georges bulletin board comment.

Who is insecure, and whose right is it for you to judge? Iowa State has been behind for much of the game in all of their big wins this year and in some games that weren't considered big. Why should it be a big surprise for people that have been following the team this year that it should happen again in this game? Our luck will surely run out at some point, but this team is good, and better than Iowa from my vantage point. I am not insecure.
