How the Hawks Outplayed Us

I will also say that our Cyclones are going to make some teams look really bad in conference play when things click and we are firing on all cylinders. Give the Hawks credit for disrupting our flow last night. But give us more credit for finding a way to win.

I'm interested in the how of the Hawks dominant play. I know there are a ton of people on here with more bball smarts than me. I was unable to tune watch the game until the very end of the second half. What I saw for most of the game is the Cyclones getting outplayed. I was really impressed with the offense and defense of the Hawks. Everyone says we had an off-night, but we have to give the Hawks and Fran credit. I was disturbed by how the Hawks seemed to disrupt our offense- nothing seemed to flow. They had some amazing looking plays we couldn't seem to stop. And their dominance on the boards was a blow-out.

Does anyone have thoughts on the Hawks scheme and game plan? Obviously other coaches are going to look at this game closely in preparation for us. Or is it as simple as saying, we were the grittier team- we found a way to win?

White is a terrible matchup for us and we clanked a TON of fts. Anything else was pretty trivial in terms of the challenge they presented us at home.

I don't know what kind of D Nader or McKay (or even Cunningham) can play but at least we'll have two guys his size who are incredibly athletic to try to stick on White next year.

Something doesn't add up here...

I thought their defense was a little overrated, but when their offense is allowed to run like we let them do the majority of the game, it's a legit offense. It almost seems like Fred was too worried about racking up fouls, so he let them run more and was hoping our offense would click to out gun them.

First I agree White is a good player but I think we didn't defend him well. What We should have done is force him to put the ball on the floor and let him take deep jump shots. Even though he made his jump shots they were uncontested. Most of his damage was running baseline to the hoop or put backs.

Iowa is very good in the transition game and rebounding. I thought ISU's game plan was to take away lanes to the hoop and force Iowa into jump shots. The first half they were making those jump shots but a lot of them uncontested. In the second half those same jump shots weren't falling.

The number one thing that upset me the most was just our effort on transition defense. And that's all it was... poor effort. Like the announcers kept saying... if ISU is going to continue to jog back on defense, they are going to keep giving up layups and dunks. It never seemed to get any better as the game went on.

So while Iowa was getting layups and dunks on their end, we were needing amazing offensive plays by Niang just to keep it within 10 pts all night. That was frustrating. Iowa getting a lot of easy baskets, while we were having to work hard to get ours. That HAS to change.

I thought Ejim's effort in transition defense in particular was awful. Jogging up and down the court. And Niang isn't the fastest guy in the world either getting back on defense. It's all about effort there, and we didn't have it most of the night and Iowa did. We played the same way against UNI. Very uninspired. Sluggish.

I give Iowa a ton of credit for their energy level, and the speed at which they play. Of course, they do get more breathers than our guys do, but that's because they can. That's part of being a good team.

I just think at times, Ejim and Kane look like they're just going through the motions out there. They don't have the intensity they need. If they played with the kind of energy that Aaron White does, they'd be unreal.

Enough of this "Iowa outplayed us" nonsense. Excuse me for not feeling guilty about a win. Didn't, by virtue of scoring more points in a head-to-head matchup, Iowa State outplay Iowa? I just don't get it.

Kane didn't show up. Thomas didn't play very well. While Melvin's numbers were good, I don't think he played exceptionally well either. We couldn't seem to make a jumpshot. We still beat a ranked team by 3. I take nothing negative out of that.

scoreboard says otherwise. I'll take the objective evidence.

I've only seen about ten people today, but I have been informed that ISU didn't really win, didn't deserve to win, and asked what bowl game ISU is going to already several times.

Monte and Naz played in place of MT for most of the game because MT couldn't stay in front of Gesell.

Iowa played well enough, and our rhythm was certainly disrupted. But, if we'd hit just our free throw average that was a 12 point win. Also, again last night, our newcomers forced some really poor and ill-timed shots. This was maddening as we'd done such a great job of passing it around the perimeter, and then someone would get impatient and force a really dumb shot, and then everyone would move away from the basket rather than go for a put-back rebound. Fred's got some good film to work with here, and I hope he does so!

On the upside, remember where we were a year ago at this time! We're still learning to play together, but this should be a good learning game!

Felt like ISU was getting beat by 20 the entire game. While Iowa probably outplayed ISU, they lacked the ability to put that game away and ISU took advantage.

Two things come to mind when thinking about Iowa's Achilles heel. One is that they're not nearly as deep as people say. Their bench guys get good minutes, but they don't do much with them other than keep the starters fresh. Iowa's got three guys averaging in double-digit scoring (before last night, we had six), and one of those guys is Roy Devyn Marble. Which brings me to number two...

Roy Devyn Marble has to be one of the most overrated players in Iowa history. He is a poor, poor shooter, and only scores a lot because he's a chucker that takes a lot of shots. It's hilarious when people mention him as a future NBA player.

that at was my thought as well. We are too worried about foul trouble to not have trouble with bigs that get out in transition as well as Iowa.

Marble is a good player and White really hustled and played his rear off. Whites performance was Lafesteresque.

We really need to get this free throw problem solved.

HILARIOUS

Haven't re watched it all yet, but sure seemed like we ran less pick n roll than usual. Some may have to do with their zone, but I also thought Iowa played way more man to man defense then our coaches expected.

Kane never really got going. Seemed to have more clear out, one on one matchups, as opposed to screen n roll.

Defensively, obviously didn't get back in transition, guys seemed to lose their man alot, and sometimes were just plain caught flat footed. For multiple stretches, the defensive intensity just wasn't there....for whatever reason.
