How the Hawks Outplayed Us

The better team wins. Unless someone throws up a prayer half court shot or something freaky similar, the team that outplayed the other wins. I will certainly admit that Iowa looked a lot better than I thought they would, but I also have no problem saying that we were the better team. We had guys that were having off nights and still found a way to come out on top. They had their best player having a CAREER night and still lost. Only at ISU do we feel guilty about and apologetic about wins.

Last year ISU was clearly the better team and got manhandled in Iowa City so no the better team does not always win. Was Texas Tech better than us too?

Nobody feels guilty about winning. There's a difference between that and having an objective observation.

Iowa outplayed us in all but three facets - putting ISU away, the final two minutes, and the final score.

I don't feel guilty about saying this or how we won at all. Conversely, I think it speaks to the character of this team - to be outplayed by an opponent and still find a way to win.

On both accounts, they were better those nights.

As far as the Iowa game, we were better last night...not by much. But, I think they played closer to their best game than we did, so I could argue that even ignoring the obvious (that we won) that we are still better.

Agreed. It feels like this might be our year to do something special. The last 2 seasons we would likely lost the BYU, UNI and Iowa games.

The better team in those 40 minutes wins the game. How else could you possibly measure better team other than the score on the scoreboard?

This does not apply for a season-long determination, obviously. But on Friday night, Iowa State was better than Iowa. Why? Because they won. That's how it works.

exactly, otherwise, what is the point? The ONLY way I can see this not being true would be an obviously horrendous call by an official that decided it (there wasn't) or a prayer at the buzzer that went in (there wasn't).

I've re watched that play a few times, because I too was very confused. It looks like Iowa St. was in some kinda zone, because you could see the players pointing out who's coming across.

I think it was Kane that got pinned on a down screen, and like usual last night there was poor communication on who was supposed to step out.

But all this is kinda contradicted in the post game interview, when Fred said they were suppose to foul. Well its kinda hard to intentionally foul when you're in a zone.

Something definitely wasn't communicated or executed right on that possession, but thank goodness it didn't go down.

Go figure the last second three that we don't guard doesn't go in.........

I was in the lower section behind McCabe with a perfect angle to see the basket. The shot was dead on and looked like he was going to bury it. Thank God it rimmed out.

If your avatar has any insight to what kind of person you are OP, you are probably a Hawkeye troller at best. Your Avatar is mean and reeks of bullying. Nice post #91.

The OP stated it right. I don't feel like Iowa is the better team. They definitely out played us for 38 mins. Just because the other team leads for most of the game doesn't make them better. If that was the case then UNI is the better team as well.

Lack of hustle. The Hawks just wanted it more. MT is going to struggle with the faster point guards he always seems to be about a step or two behind his guy. The hawks and especially, their bigs, were getting up and down the court and our guys seemed to be just jogging back.

The inbound pass to white over Deandre for an easy touch and was boggling to me. You just don't give up that easy of a shot. We were just out of position and gave up a lot of easy shots.

Hawks were very aggressive to the boards and it showed. Our guys looked lost at times, at least they have enough maturity to not get their heads down and fight back.

With that being said we missed a ton of free throws!! However, we win!!! Good teams find a way to finish and get it done even if it was ugly!

The only area where I saw that Iowa had a true advantage was in rebounding, and that was almost totally related to their height. Outside of rebounding though, I don't see where their height helped them that much. Iowa had one blocked shot, ISU had 2. ISU only had 10 turnovers.

Rebounding, Iowa was dominate. Dustin did a great job, but DeAndre and Niang were not as productive as normally there. Also, I think Melvin is still a little bit behind in his rebounding this year. That may be due to his injury, or maybe due to the fact that Dustin is in there now, or both. Hopefully, his numbers there will start to pick up.

Honestly, I expected Iowa's height to be a lot bigger problem, both on defense and on offense. I was not sure how ISU would stop them in the paint, yet Iowa only out-scored ISU by 4 in the paint. To me, with their height advantage, that is just amazing.

I honestly think in 10 games, 5 here and 5 there, Iowa beats us 6-7 times.

Disagree. I think we win all 5 at home and they win all 5 in carver. I would say this is the worst of our "imaginary" 5 home games against the hawks. The statistical anomaly where we only make 6 threes. The other 4 in Hilton would be more dominant by us. Also we would learn how to defend the inbounds pass to white under their basket.

I don't think you guys should feel guilty, but you can still recognize Iowa played better for 37ish minutes and couldn't close.

Iowa played slightly better for 37ish minutes, but when you factor in the 3 minutes that isu played far better, the end result is isu played better over the full 40 minutes. That's why we won.

Enough of this "Iowa outplayed us" nonsense. Excuse me for not feeling guilty about a win. Didn't, by virtue of scoring more points in a head-to-head matchup, Iowa State outplay Iowa? I just don't get it.

Kane didn't show up. Thomas didn't play very well. While Melvin's numbers were good, I don't think he played exceptionally well either. We couldn't seem to make a jumpshot. We still beat a ranked team by 3. I take nothing negative out of that.

They did a nice job of running the floor and that was impressive. They choice to be aggressive in defending the post, and got a lot of fouls. Not sure how this is ISUs fault or the fault of the officials. Yes, they missed some calls on ISU, but they also didn't call a bunch of things on Iowa, including a bunch of illegal screens by Woodbury at the top of the key. Iowa played great Free throw defense, and that was what kept ISU down in this game.

Either Kane or Ejim should have been on McCabe for that last shot; Kane got stuck behind a screen down low (and honestly didn't look to be fighting through it very hard) and Ejim was near the top of the key and made an attempt to contest the shot but couldn't make it very close. Not sure whose responsibility it was.

But up 3 with 10 s left or whatever it was not really sure why Kane was even down by the block. Who cares if they get a layup at that point?

Fred said in the postgame that the game plan was to foul before they got a 3 point shot off. Oops.

I'm not even gonna read this drivel. Iowa couldn't make a shot to save there life in the final 2 minutes. How the **** does that qualify as outplaying an opponent? Especially when the opponent goes on a 8-0 run.

The better team won. Now STFU and GTFO.
