You could say you are "going for the messages" referring to grocery shopping- Prob solved you're welcome

Well, I think the sh sound in grocery is similar to how the word “sure” is pronounced. Even though it is a “c” in grocery it has an “s” sound. I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone with strong Iowan roots pronounce it without the sh sound. My family also has rural roots, so it could either be a city vs. rural thing or different classes pronounce it differently. My older family members also say warsh, I am catching myself saying it like that more the older I get.

4th Generation Iowan. Never noticed anyone saying Grosheries; only grosseries or grossries. And said Warsh and Warshington as a child so it's probably even more regional. Maybe central Iowa???

The other one I hear a lot in the lower tier of counties in Iowa is "FEESH" instead of FISH

Also had a friend of a friend from near Ottumwa, called the thing you hook to the dog's collar to take him/her for a walk, a "LISH" instead of LEASH.

I spent some time researching this and discovered that, when I read it, I pronounce it "gro-ser-ee" in my head. However, when I actually say it, I pronounce it "groesh-ree".

More like "Grow-shree".

I also had a fairly profound speech difficulties as a kid (Ls, Rs, and Ss - hit the jackpot, yeah!), and guess I always thought maybe it was a remnant of that. Years of speech therapy fixed a lot of it, but it still comes out as an adult when I'm nervous, in a rush, or drinking.

I hate the sound of the word so I just say “store” or “food”. Same type of terrible sound as jewelry and wash.
