One thing for certain, this position is more desirable now than it was 3 years ago. The list of possible candidates that CW put out looks good to me

Re: ***Offensive Coordinator Search Thread***

Nothing funny bout losing our OC - one thing that helps programs continue to get better imo is stability.

However, when i texted a friend (hawkeye fan) his response was classic and quite funny....

He said he hoped Ohio State would hire iowas offensive coaches and then said, sorry but i hope ISU hires them.....

not sure which direction CPR goes, but i hope its a quick hire as OC is a position that needs to be in place for off season workouts....be great if he was in place for bowl game so he could attend and see strengths and weaknesses before the offseason!!!

Good Luck CPR....

BTW - not a fan of Kingsbury, not enough coaching experience in my opinion...

Re: ***Offensive Coordinator Search Thread***

You don't leave coaching positions open for long, so I would expect it to be filled fairly quickly (within a week?). You are going to hire someone who is an OC or a QB coach that is familiar with the system you want to run, spread in our case. Given the potential this offense has shown at times and the fact that we are in the Big 12, it is a prime spot for an OC at a non-AQ league to step-up. You could also see a QB coach (or similar coaching spot) from an AQ league make the step up as well, but I'd lean more towards the non-AQ OC coming in.

The list CW had was a very good start and I think if we can grab one of them it wouldn't be a bad hire at all, but it always seems like our hires come out of left field and make everyone say 'interesting' so we'll see what happens here.

Re: ***Offensive Coordinator Search Thread***

How about the OC at Baylor. They had an explosive offense and if we could hire him it might set them back a bit.

Completely lateral move, if that, and will never happen. You could perhaps sucker away a QB or position coach away from another Big 12 team but not another coordinator.

Looking at that list I really like what Matt Canada has done this year. He looks like he has a run spread but very efficient when they do pass. Sounds like when paired with this defense it could be very effective.

NIU offensive rankings

rushing O: #9
Passing O: #59
Pass efficiency: #15

I assume CPR has had a short list and has been making calls for a few days now.

Re: ***Offensive Coordinator Search Thread***

I think Mangino's character issues are on par with Leach's.

I'd take that fat bastard in a heartbeat.

I agree on Mangino - besides, anyone who said he had character issues - how many issues did you hear about when he was an OC? NONE....

The position of HC has over-riding authority and if he started that business, i would think he would have a clause to can him....

Plus being fired for it and out of coaching, i would assume theres been a bit of a reality check with him.... i could see him really embracing the challenge to re-establish his name....

On the topic of herman - does anyone have credible information that his contract was not renewed or is it similar to when a recruit picks someone else and then everyone jumps on board with the we didnt want him anyway......

Im sorry but I dont like Kingsbury. too much passing for ISU. We need our running game. Also he reminds me too much like Herman. I think we will go a different route this time.

Alrite people keep saying barney cotton... Who is he and why is it funny?

Is it darius and Jordan cottons dad? who used to play for iowa? Or is it barney from How i met your mother?

He as the Danny Macs last OC, he was suppose to bring the spread to ISU, but failed at it badly. No he is Nebs OLine coach.

I think we will too. CPR has seen how effective and beneficial a running game can be to the defense. I wouldn't be surprised if we get an OC that likes to operate a running spread O like Rich Rod.

My pick would be:
1. Mangino or Franklin - Both qualified and i think would jump at a BCS school with a guy like Rhoads as their HC.

3. For others who are "just old enough" (like me), does it seem like the attention given to coordinators and position coaches has grown exponentially within even the past 15 years?

Definitely. We're starting to see valued assistants getting thrown salaries that only head coaches could sniff just a few years ago.

Franklin at LA Tech doesn't have overly impressive stats but his team has done well against ranked and BCS opponents. What kind of spread does he run?
