Harbaugh

UofM is laying off and may take losses up to a Billion dollars - not good optics buying out Harbaugh and a new coach from their old school. Harbaugh may also get an extra year of eligibility due to Covid.

I remember similar statements being made about the Mayor.

I'm cautiously optimistic but I won't hold my breath.
There were a ton of warning signs pertaining to Fred. There have been none with Matt.

A “few million“ over the course of a contract I would agree with you. A few million per year of the contract would essentially double his pay. That would be hard to ignore.
Just curious. Just picking round numbers. Let’s say $8 million a year at Michigan for the next five years

Or $3.5 million a year at ISU for the next thirty.

How’s that math work out for total pay?

You are right, but the risk of it not working out in Michigan is high. If he is shown the door at Michigan in three years then what? An assistant job for significantly less than he is making now? A HC job at Eastern Michigan (example) for less than he is making now? All I am saying is he is getting paid well and has job security. That means a lot.

Lastly, I might add because I've not seen it anywhere, are we sure Michigan wants Campbell? Michigan thinks highly of themselves and would Campbell's ISU record be good enough for them? I doubt it.

I'm positive that most of their fan base would not be very happy if they got Matt Campbell. Just what Matt would want too right? To go into a place where the fans are already unhappy about you being there.

"Warning signs" doesn't cover it.

I remember Pollard saying at one point early in Fred's tenure that, "We will lose him to the NBA someday."

His contract being explicitly structured so he could go to the NBA, well...

It all wasn't a "warning sign," it was a promise.

You are right that there are no equivalents for Campbell for the NFL or to blue-blood programs.

He turned down Urban Meyer and Ohio State once, after all.

Michigan has culture issues like Texas.
Money is no object and you can get great players, but there are unrealistic expectations. Palms were greased to get those 5 stars, promises were made by other people, probably a bunch of insufferable donors getting involved and wanting your attention.

Let’s see. The Mayor, who had always made his NBA dreams clear, versus Matt Campbell, who has made his admiration clear for guys like John Stiegelmeir at South Dakota State and Bill Snyder at K-State—or (especially) Larry Kehres, his own coach at Mount Union—who stayed in one place and established their own legacy.

Hmm. One of these things is not like the other.

CMC has also said that he’d hoped to build at Toledo what was built at Boise State—but Jamie convinced him he could do that in Ames.

Until something proves that Matt Campbell can’t build a program to a championship level at ISU, I don’t think we have to worry about him going anywhere. Resources, recruiting, whatever would have to fail.

And his plan seems to be working so far.

I am always prepared to be disappointed. I am an ISU fan, after all.

But I am way less worried about Campbell leaving than I was Hoiberg.

Fred you kind of knew we were on borrowed time. Campbell... could be our Fry.

Wonder if Campbell & his wife liked living in the Toledo area because believe Ann Arbor is only like an hour from there? Maybe they liked it and would want to go back or maybe it is the opposite and they would rather stay in Ames.

Probably wouldn't be the top consideration but something to think about as they are familiar with that area.

Campbell doesn't want any ol' job that is deemed flashy or in a "flashy" conference or at a school that is going to turn on you quickly if you don't win right away. Last year when Arkansas contacted Matt, he told people close to him that "I'd rather f***ing coach Grand View". Turned down Florida State, turned down a couple of NFL jobs. I'm guessing he sees Michigan and wants to stay as far away from that job as possible in its current state.

NY Post pushing for the Jets to hire Harbaugh

I think he'll jump ship to the league before he gets canned. That guy has too much ego and being an alum, that's probably the least messy way both sides could do this. The writing has to be on the wall though, this isn't going to end on a positive note.

It seems like people are equating building something at ISU to rebuilding at Michigan which is just two totally different things. At ISU in 2015, any sort of real foundational plan was a step up, and at Michigan, it seems like there's too many issues to have to ward off in order to establish a new culture in addition to huge expectations.

Back to the discussion of the boundaries of the midwest...I've always felt that there are parts of Michigan and Ohio that are Midwest (Grand Rapids, Dayton, etc.) and parts that aren't (Detroit, Cleveland)

Why do we have to start this discussion again?
