Hallice Cooke on Prohm

Ummm what?
I know it is crazy to think about but would this be the worst thing in the world? Guy knows how to recruit and develop PG talent. Would have 0 control of any huddles/timeout usage. I could honestly get on board with it.

Who knows if this is how it really happened, but I remember being surprised by this quote

Was Prohm really Hoiberg's top choice to replace him, over TJ?
I think that was a case of Jamie trying to win the press conference. Spoiler alert from Williams' book, but Fred was talking to TJ about leaving if the NBA came calling, plus all of the players wanted TJ. The reason why TJ stayed was 1, it was too late in the coaching carousel that summer to find a new staff to work for, and 2, to keep all of those guys together on that team.

Prohm was beyond a turd. All he had was a roster full nba talent given to him. I’d rather sit through a Jim Walden vs Duncan football game than one of Prohm’s coached basketball teams.
I got SO MUCH flak for knowing Prohm was ass years before he was fired. Some posters on here were huffing his farts until the bitter end.

Of course not. And I say that as a person that doesn't hate Prohm. The amount of people that fell for that lie is astounding to me.

Correct and Prohm was put in a tough spot starting a bit late to recruit or hit the portal for new guys that first season

Not to bag on Prohm, but since we're pretty much biding our time waiting for games tomorrow...

First off, he was a great guy. No issues there. Second, he WAS in a tough spot with recruiting. He had basically a whole roster returning and was not going to be able to sign anyone worth a damn in April. The portal wasn't what it is now because players had to sit out a year unless they were a grad. And not many grad transfers wanted to come off the bench behind our returnees.

That all said, I don't think that he should have tried to run Hoiberg's system and I definitely do not think he should have been trying to recruit the South. You are never going to win at ISU with the South as your main recruiting pipeline. I thought he figured out his error when he got THT and Conditt from Chicago and Hali from WI, but then he went right back to it and didn't really hit those northern cities again. He did have some big hits but also major misses. He probably would have been more successful with today's portal.

In-game coaching was OK at best. I never did understand the calling timeouts after made baskets. Like he was actually trying to kill Hilton Magic. And don't get me started on the chapstick.

Has there ever been another coach who simply just didn't have "it" like Steve Prohm at ISU? It didn't feel right from the start, had moments where it was like "ok this might work" but then ultimately was a massive dud that cratered the program.

A guy who only worked in the South was bound for failure, his wife HATED Ames as well... It got reeeeeally ugly after Tyrese left, and NWB left. Those 2 alone covered for Steve.
Good guy... bad fit. Thanks, Leath.

Tim Floyd was a southerner who succeeded here; like many things in life it really just depends on the person.

Steve always came across as a more meek personality, and probably wasn’t able to be as firm and direct with his players the way Otz is. Guys like THT and Bolton, while talented, probably needed more of that.

I liked him and was pulling for him to succeed, but when it all fell apart it wasn’t a total surprise.

Samesies. There are a couple posters that come to mind that I won’t name.

Most people were done with Prohm that last year, but even then there was still a handful of people that raised all of the usual concerns: “just because we fire him doesn’t mean we’d find better,” “don’t the tournament results matter,” “he’s a good man”. Just all sorts of loser horse sh*t.

Probably why TJ said, thanks, but no thanks for him to return.

And why he did well at Gonzaga afterwards. Mark Few isn’t going to put up with any BS. And at that program there’s plenty of other talented players behind you wanting to play.
