Grass Lots

No way. 48 hours of good weather and they will be in better shape than you think.

There were parts of the grass lots they didn't park for the Akron game that if you walked across you'd sink in a couple inches because it was still pretty saturated so imagine how bad those spots are now after all this rain. There was more dry weather prior to the Akron game too.

Let's not forget that there is a chance of rain again on game day that will factor into this, they aren't going to park cars in already sketchy lots then risk having more rain on game day making them even worse. I hate to say it but I'll be surprised if any of the grass lots are open Saturday. We've just had too much rain and even if it does stop for a couple days it's not going to be warm and sunny to dry them out in just 2 days.

Is it really too much to ask to just pave the damn grass lots and be done with it?

You going to be the lead donor for that project? I'm sure JP would gladly give you a quote on the kind of money that would take and will even give you naming rights if you foot a good chunk of that bill. You are talking about an awful lot of cubic feet of concrete or asphalt plus the costs of the engineering that would go with putting in storm drains and grading/prep work that has to be done to complete a project like that.

Yes it would be nice if all the lots were paved but realistically it would take a lot of $ to do. Just look at the shape the lots between Hilton and Jack Trice are in that could use some repairs too.

It would obviously be quiet expensive and down the list of project priority. BUT, they are losing a big chunk of change everytime they close those grass lots and send people to free parking who knows where. They are picking up $20 a pop for what 5,000 cars? That is $100,000 a home game and they've already closed or partially closed those lots 2-3 games. Now they do get an extra parking game this year for what will probably be a small crowd against IW. $200,000 - $300,000 in lost revenue would make be consider my options. Not to mention that it makes the tailgating environment and overall product much better.

They open grass lot. People get stuck. People get mad at AD for opening lot. Want AD to pay for damage to vehicle because they buried their vehicle.

A few years ago, when G-7 was closed because of rain, you could use your G-7 pass to park in the lots around Hilton and Scheman.

This week there is volleyball at noon—will they restrict those lots again for Volleyball parking? It will be done before the game starts, but not before people wanting to tailgate.

I doubt they lose too much considering they still are probably paying for parking staff that just gets reassigned if the lots are closed. Don't get me wrong I'd love for them to pave the grass lots but it would likely be a multi million dollar project and probably not high on priorities for facility upgrades when they only get used 6 or 7 games a year.

Another thing to take into consideration is you pave all the grass lots and it decreases the amount of green space that ISU will have. Those grass lots look way better than paving the rest of the wk/yr.

And they have a green space requirement because it's a land grant university.

And paving everything would be millions of dollars. It's the same reason Iowa State Center isn't milled and repaved. The cost would be astronomical and there really isn't a tangible benefit.

I agree somewhat, and I am a guy who stays in G7 because I like the extra space for tailgating compared to paved lots. But, it's not a bad thing to move to VetMed when G7 is too wet.

Yeah, it wasn't horrible since the weather was perfect for the long walk back. I would have been worried for my parents had it been as hot as the OU game. We ended up on the backside of VetMed so the tailgating atmosphere wasn't as good.

Probably cost 500 min to get a spot there if they did that I would think. Parking passes are like gold I would think there would be a way to come out making money for the Cyclone club.

Good point. I wonder if they will close the lots around Hilton and potentially the lots around Scheman since some of the lots around Hilton are already closed due to construction. I know the close the lots around Hilton earlier this year for a Vball game the day of a home football game.

Edit: For the Akron game ISU played Baylor at 3pm. They closed the lots around Hilton for pass holders and VBall game attendees. Scheman was open for general public RV's. However, the grass lots were open besides G7. They may keep Scheman for regular cars, and push the RV's out.

With some quick Google Earth measurements, there is about 1,000,000 square feet of grass lot parking. So $2 million in materials only and another $1-$2 million in installation costs most likely. Expensive project to offset something that happens maybe once per year.
