I make a pretty mean breakfast. Bacon, cheesy scrambled eggs cooked in the bacon grease, and hash browns with onions and peppers. Rinse with black coffee and a Bloody Mary.
Are you drinking a mimosa?I don't do breakfast a ton.
It was a fairly simple breakfast, but most memorable recently was looking out over the bay in Newport, Oregon, having what they called a 'small' pancake.
Thing was massive.
As an appreciation gift for coaching the last couple of years, a family has given me maple syrup that is made by one of their friends that is sold only to specialty food stores and gift shops. My kids prefer Market Pantry syrup from Target. As always, the moral of the story is that kids are weird. As a child, most sunday mornings my dad would make waffles, eggs, and ham. We ate a lot of those. Never used store bought syrup. My parents would make simple syrup and add a some Mapleine to make maple syrup. To this day, I dont like the store bought stuff. I do tolerate it more than I did as a child though. Sometimes i will get pure maple syrup, but most times i make what I ate as a child.
The syrup I make is nothing special. Two parts sugar, one part water, and artificial maple flavoring (mapleine brand is best) to taste. As an appreciation gift for coaching the last couple of years, a family has given me maple syrup that is made by one of their friends that is sold only to specialty food stores and gift shops. Have driven and ridden by there many times but never stopped. I take it you would recommend it?There are 3 that come to mind. The first two are in Minnesota
- The Cajun (with the Andouiille Sausage) at Dehn's Manor
- The stuffed French Toast at Mavericks (sour dough French Bread)
The other was The Migas at the Ruby Slipper Cafe in New Orleans.
However, I'm not sure anything hit the spot better than Doritos and Mountain Dew on hangover Saturday mornings (OK, it was probably more like lunch time at the earliest) during college.
I totally forgot it was Friday. Eh.
What's your favorite breakfast food you've ever had? I think mine might be the key lime French toast that Provisions in Ames had a couple of summers ago.
Do you still want my restaurant recommendations?Have driven and ridden by there many times but never stopped. I take it you would recommend it?
You had me at "prime rib".Do you still want my restaurant recommendations?
Dinner is pretty good. The breakfasts are great.
It's an old school place. Meats with little seasoning, salad dressing comes in one of those old-timey 3 cup salad dressing holders, you get a basket of crackers before the meal, and the dinner rolls come with those little individual pats of butter. It's also a bottle club. The prime rib is very good and the hashbrowns are some of the best hashbrowns ever.
Disclaimer: The owners of the restaurant are sort of related to my wife. Their oldest son owned the construction company that built our house and their younger son (who now runs the restaurant) is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
breakfast is my least favorite. I HATE pancakes, waffles, French toast, regular toast, cold cereal, hot cereal. I will eat egg dishes but it has to be the least breakfast type dish. So the southwest omelet or the taco breakfast skillet. My favorite is a southwest omelet at the original pancake house in Edina. Not in ankeny.
I did try and sort of like sweet pancakes in Amsterdam. But I mostly liked the fruit and whipped cream.
Be forewarned, this anecdote should give you an idea about the place's typical clientele. When the son that runs the place found out that giant senior living complex was being built at the end of the road, this is what he said, "JC - They are building 400 senior living apartments at the end of the road. Those are MY people."You had me at "prime rib".

Oops. I'll fix that.Whats a senior leaving complex? A funeral home?
