All the talk about The Office reminds me how I recently rewatched Age of Ultron and I could not get Robert California out of my head every time Ultron said anything. It gave an interesting twist to the movie.
Friday OT - Casting Changes

For sure. I would have liked them not replacing SC at all, keep the cast as is, promote someone into the Michael position. It tried way too hard to replace Michael. Sigh.
The Andy Griffith show.
His first girlfriend was Ellie (Elinor Donahue - the same actress who played the older daughter on Father Knows Best). Later his love interest was Opie's teacher, Miss Crump. Miss Crump was marginally better.
Howard Sprague was added as a major character - always thought he was basically just annoying as hell.
Then when Don Knotts as Barney left they incorporated the Warren Ferguson character as his replacement. Awful awful character.
Then when Griffith left and they carried on as Mayberry RFD the end was realized.
Other great characters were Otis Campbell and Aunt Bee's friend/nemesis Clara Edwards. Honorable mention to Floyd the barber and Emmit the fix-it guy.

In that 70's show. When Topher Grace, Eric left for the Final season replaced by josh meyers, randy, he wasn't a good fit for the show. Would have been better to just leave Eric as having gone to Africa and keep the rest the same.
Also in that show, while not a major character, Eric's sister was recast due to the original actor's, Lisa Robin Kelly, struggle with drugs. Never want to see that, and she never got better either she died a few years ago from an over dose, and looked terrible.
On a more positive note, the addition of Danny Divito in season 2 to It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia was genius.

Try watching The Big Short without picturing Steve Carrell and the goofy accent he speaks in as Michael Scott.
I remember when Nick Colasanto died, I figured there's no way they'll ever replace the role of Coach on Cheers. He was just so scatter-brained and lovable....

Yeah, you know they're nearing the end when they add a little kid. Oliver on the Brady Bunch comes to mind...there's a bunch of others.
Dallas is my favorite old school network TV drama. The first season (1978 mini series) and up until "Who shot JR" (at the end of the third season in 1980) is just 24 karat solid gold. And Larry Hagman's J.R. Ewing is possibly the greatest TV villain ever. That said, their replacements all kinda sucked. Don't have time to name them all but the new Digger Barnes, Jock Ewing, Jenna Wade, etc. ... none of them were better.

'Cheers' moving from Coach to Woody behind the bar I think is one of the best changes made by a TV show. Coach was clearly the best and it was horrible when he died, but Woody was superb as the new guy.
I find Festus one of the most annoying characters ever. Sorry, just the way he comes across with that weird accent always grated on me.
One of my favorite Cheers moments, during the episode highlighting Frasier's bachelor party - the guys in the bar are talking about crazy bachelor party moments, and Woody interjects. The following exchange:
Sam: Well, Woody, when a bunch of guys get together to send another guy off to his doom, some pretty raunchy things can happen.
Woody: Yeah? You guys ever dress up farm animals in women's clothing?
Sam (spitting a mouthful of water all over): No!
Woody: Well, I'm one up on ya, then.

For 5 seasons, Kinchloe was the communications/radio guy on Hogan's Heroes. For season 6, the final season, he escaped and Baker was brought in. The Germans never figured it out.
House of Cards after the whole Kevin Spacey removal.
I understand the move but that garbage they put out in that final season was something to behold. I struggled to finish it. Though you could argue it was getting bad after Season 3. I thought they had a great premise leading into Season 5 and blundered that. Then between Season 5 and 6 the Spacey crap happened and all hope was lost.

Not to derail the thread, but the history of the casting of The Godfather has some pretty crazy details. Francis Ford Coppola wanted Al Pacino in the role of Michael, but the studio heads wanted somebody like Ryan O'Neal or Robert Redford. (How wrong would that have been?) Coppola threatened to walk off the picture (which at that point was a risky move), and they relented. Similarly, the studio wanted either Paul Newman or Steve McQueen to play Tom Hagen, but Coppola held out for Bob Duvall.
The most controversial choice, of course, was Brando as the Don. Paramount eventually required Coppola to get a signed (by Brando himself) affidavit that he (Brando) would not hold up production, as was his style. Robert Evans, head of Paramount, further told Coppola that Brando had to agree to take the role for nothing (he eventually got paid $50,000).

My Three Sons for one. The oldest kid, Mike, played by Tim Considine left the show (got married is how they wrote him out) and they inserted Ernie, who was adopted. Show was still about the same level but significantly different.
They also changed their butler/housekeeper from "Bub" (William 'Fred Mertz' Frawley) to "Uncle Charlie" (William Demarest) at about the same time.

The Mission Impossible show "kind of" replaced Martin Landau with Leonard Nimoy.
I also didn't care for Jon Voight's portrayal of Jim Phelps in the movie because I thought Peter Graves did such a great job with the TV character.

I couldn’t even get through 10 minutes of the first episode in season six.
Really the whole show starts to suck after season 2/3ish.
