What is your favorite city in the US? Why? What top cities would you like to visit?

My hierarchy of top 3:

1 - Portland, OR - it is super fun and weird and goofy and doesn't take itself too seriously. Great food, bars, music.
2 - Savannah, GA - it is also super fun, and weird, but in the exact opposite way of Portland. It's so historical and grand.
3 - NYC - I love that there is something to do all of the time, day or night.

I'd like to visit Austin, TX - I've been to most of the other big cities in TX, but think it would be a blast to visit.

Did #3 pregnant (not out yet) and seriously like coldest weekend of their year - record cold. So that part was poopy but the city itself seemed cool. Food was good.

Of the places I've been......

Nashville, Denver, and Madison are the ones I've liked best. Chattanooga as #3 if it's cheating to include the city I live in vs. visit.

Lots of places I'd like to see though.

1. Charleston, S.C. - I like history, good food, and cool old buildings. Would love to spend time here
2. Denver again - haven't gotten to enjoy all the parks and such in that area, just short work-related trips in and out
3. Something in the NE - maybe Boston.

Cheating to add more - Santa Fe, Seattle, probably Savannah and other historical cities in the south/east. And more of CA.

For my most recent birthday, Janny told me to pick anywhere in the continental 48 I wanted to go as my present. I had it narrowed down to Charleston and Portland, as I'd never been to either and was really fascinated by both. I still want to hit Charleston, but we're heading back to Portland in a few weeks because we loved it so much!

No particular order:

-New Orleans. There is no other place like it, well, anywhere. Constant energy, wild mix of cultures, phenomenal food, great music scene, 24/7 party, beautiful architecture. What's not to love.

-Nashville. It's close to jumping the shark, but it's still a lot of god damn fun. A lot of similarities with New Orleans, but less unique and weird. Music everywhere, and it's easy to get away from the over-the-top touristy ****.

-LaCrosse, WI. One of the most underrated "fun" towns on the planet. It's a mix of Mississippi River town/college town. Beautiful natural setting, an absolute crap ton of bars, and the largest Oktoberfest outside of Germany. It's completely under the radar, down to earth, energetic, and a straight up drunken good time.

-Austin. If you're sensing a theme, you may be right. Live music, good beer, close to solid outdoor amenities. Laid back, weird, fun. It's getting ruined a little, much like Nashville, but still has awesome "guts" for lack of a better term.

I've only ever been to New Orleans for work, and it was right after Katrina, so my experiences weren't especially safe or fun. I went to the French Quarter, but was with a really, really painful coworker, so I didn't at all get to experience it.

San Francisco - sure, it has loads of modern-day problems, but there's still something beautiful, magical, inspirational, and calming to me about that city. Helps that I grew up in the area and that I have a lot of connections to that location. You simply cannot beat the physical landscape of that 47 square miles for urban scenery.

Minneapolis - easy to get to, easily navigable, tons of stuff to do. For us, the best place in the midwest to visit for the 'big city' experience.

Nashville - sure, you gotta have some interest in country music to get a lot out of Nashville, but it IS an entertaining place to visit. And the restaurants... No trip to Nashville is complete without a trip to Monell's - southern food, all homemade, all you care to eat, served family style.

I have been to Seattle, but it was such a long time ago (high school), I don't remember much about it. Would enjoy visiting there; Portland, too.

I like Minneapolis, but if you want "big city" in the Midwest, Chicago is about as "big city" as it gets.

San Diego-Best weather in the U.S. and very chill when your vacationing there. Wouldn't and couldn't want to live their though.

NYC-It has everything. Like SD, love to visit but wouldn't want to live there.

No other big cities stick out to me. I want to visit the northwest more as well as Boston.

Edit: Forgot Vegas. Love Vegas.

ok, I almost almost listed LaCrosse after being there for a couple hours last week. Seriously beautiful location and the couple streets we were on just full of little restaurants, unique shops, bars, etc. Said we have to come back for a long weekend. Actually wanted to come back yet this fall as leaves are turning but just don't think we'll get the time.

NO is another good one, spouse really wants to go there.

Washington DC and New Orleans. I wouldn't want to live in either place but they are so interesting to walk around in for about 3 days.

I'd like to visit Charleston, Seattle and Miami. I know I'll dislike Miami but I'd still like to see it.

Chicago - park your car in a downtown ramp and take the el anywhere you can't walk to. Usually go for a Cubs game but still will spend another day or so doing things around the magnificent mile and Navy Pier area

Kansas City - love this town and has gotten so much better since they put in the P&L district. Could spend a week there going to BBQ places alone

Lahania in Maui. Honeymooned in Maui and would love to get back again some day. We stayed just up the road in Kaanapali but Lahania was where most of the restaurants, shops, and things to do that we spent a lot of time in that area. The sunsets in Hawaii are just awesome too

Las Vegas - just a fun town

One of these days want to get to Nashville, been there when I was a kid but that was a long time ago. Been to a lot of other big cities for summer vacations growing up but a lot has changed since then I am sure

Lahaina is a good one.

I generally have no interest in large cities but have visited many and enjoyed them. I just really prefer something more low key and navigable. I have said if I HAD to live in a larger city I would probably pick Indianapolis. Seems easy to get around in but still has major league football and basketball.

I'll add in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island.

Last but maybe most I'd like to live in - Charlotte Amolie on St. Thomas

I live an hour from La Crosse and get up there as much as I can. Just a great town.

Savannah x1000. We went there on an anniversary trip before we had kids and loved it. Stayed in Hilton Head but spent most of the time in Savannah. Our day on Tybee Island was great too. We have this on our short list as future places to go when we tire from the midwest winters. I've heard lots of good things about Charleston, but we haven't been there yet. I loved the history and beauty of Savannah and the small-ness of it, as well.
