Friday OT #2 - Hooky

Is Hootch a wine product? If so, I stand corrected.

My Catholic mother didn't like when I made that point. Jesus could've turned that water into anything. Sparkling water. Beer. Malt liquor. Kool-Aid

But He went with wine. I can't ignore that

I think Hooch would be called a “malternative” today. Whatever. 16-17 Year Old Al had some fun with it.
 
I found out we weren't going to be allowed to see UNI play Missouri in the NCAAs way back when, so I went home for lunch and stayed there to watch it.

Once I left, the teacher got a TV for the room to watch the game, but it was still better at home.
 
I was thoroughly done with high school by my senior year, so I took a math class that was easy. The teacher told me within a week that I shouldn't be there, but gave me all the assignments in advance and then let me just go to study hall about halfway through the quarter. Most of the time I left and just drove around for that hour.

My employer has a brilliant plan. After you accrue a large amount of sick time (it carries over) you can get up to your yearly allowance paid back to you at 25%. After you accumulate a ridiculous amount you can get up to your yearly allowance paid back to you at 50%. After you accumulate an obscene amount you can get your yearly allowance paid back to you at 75%. After you accumulate an insane amount you can get your yearly allowance paid back to you at 100%.

It encourages people to not just take sick time for nothing because there is a real incentive to accumulate it. It also rewards those who make a habit of not taking sick time for nothing year over year. Paying a few hundred bucks extra to long time employees annually is a small price to pay for having employees consistently show up for work and not have to deal with a bunch of extra call outs just because the leave is "use it or lose it".

For the employees, the accumulated sick time to get to those levels also acts as a short term disability bank that can cover an employee until they qualify for long term disability.

At my high school we got a certain number of excused absences for school visits our senior year. I had zero chance of even considering going to Iowa, but I may or may not have taken a Friday for a school visit so I could spend a long weekend in the dorm room of a certain Iowa Freshman co-ed. No semblance of a "school visit" was taken, but I was in Iowa City...
 
High school hooky was a no go unless you count the time Dad let me skip school to go to Farm Progress Show with him.

Hooky from work once, you accumulated PTO to use either way, was maxed out with no carry over, burnt a day skiing fresh snow at Afton Alps.

I won't count all the classes I skipped during college.

Senior year of high school, Senior skip day. We went to a park, got a keg and some Sun Country wine coolers, and played volleyball.

For labels they really oughta just call all of it a 'personal day' imo.

Being sick, needing a break, doctor's visit, traveling for family etc. are all personal.

When the kids were young, my wife and I would take one unscheduled sick day in early December to go Christmas shopping. That wasn't a super-fun hooky day but it did help with our Holiday season sanity.

I'd be surprised if I have taken 5 sick days in my 28 years here. That isn't be bragging, either. We don't get paid sick days, so I don't take sick days. And we're maxed at 15 vacation days per year (they can roll over, which I always do)

The "non-paid sick days" is a stupid policy that has definitely led to the spread of sickness over the years.

Not until college. I had less than stellar attendance especially when it came to the random required general credits. Psych 101 for example I took a semester with with 4 other 300 and 400 level engineering courses, attendance for 101 was maybe 50% but still an easy A-. Handful of Wednesdays a few of us would blow off class to golf 36 holes at Honey Creek, $35 for unlimited holes.
 
When my daughter was little, I would let her pick one day to do a "daddy-daughter skip day' and do something fun (zoo, park, pool, etc)

Then around 4th grade, she decided that she didn't want to miss school (she was a big time rule follower), and the tradition came to a screeching halt.

You were on the campus. It counts as a school visit.

Did they let you leave your horse and wagon tied up at the one room school house? Just wondering how you got home.
