- The Iowa State Fair
Apparently if you live in central Iowa, you're supposed to love the fair so much you go multiple times each year. And if you don't, you're looked at like there is something wrong with you.
I like Canadians. Solidified when I was in Basel, Switzerland and had no francs and the retired Canadian dentists paid for my coffee and treat at a patio cafe. Of course that was two years ago and before we declared war on Canada.
How about calling an assist a "dime"
In no particular order:
I'm sure I could come up with a bunch more but these are the first ones that came to mind.
- Tailgating - Why go to all that work to do something I can do better and easier at home.
- Social Media - I don't care about what other people are doing all the time and have no desire to tell other people what I'm doing.
- Beaches - Love the ocean (or any body of water really) just don't care for beaches.
- Beer - Never really liked the taste of it.
- Standing at sporting events - When did never sitting down start anyway - the 90's? What a stupid idea.
It's not just an Iowa thing. The Minnesota State Fair is a huge deal up here, too. If you don't get throttled when it's fair time, you're viewed with suspicion. Also, don't ever dare suggest the Iowa State Fair is better than the Minnesota. You will be charged with heresy and burned at the stake.
You should see the reactions when i talk about WI fishing being just as good as it is in Minnesota, or that there's more lakes in WI, or when I tell Wisconsinites that fishing in Iowa can be great too. Blasphemy!
I've heard that a the definition of a lake is much smaller in Wisconsin dozens of times. People in Minnesota are pretty protective of the 10,000 lakes title. You should see the reactions when i talk about WI fishing being just as good as it is in Minnesota, or that there's more lakes in WI, or when I tell Wisconsinites that fishing in Iowa can be great too. I would rather fish in Door County over any Minnesota lake

1: Mumford and Sons
2: Ketchup, mustard, and ranch
3: Cards Against Humanity-We get it, the card is ssoooo shocking
4: The World Cup
5: Fancy restaurants
I had a difficult time telling a Minnesotan once about a 25ish inch walleye I once caught in the Wapsi in eastern Iowa. His retort was that walleye didn't get that big in Iowa rivers, like fish don't grow once you cross the border.
One of the things I miss MOST from my Iowa days... Nothing like the smell of - well the SMELLS of that segment of humanity and the "foods" they consume... I also miss the stickiness of everything.
But the Varied Industries building - if it's still there - was always a favorite.
