Friday 5: Guilty displeasures

1. Assists - I like the guys who get the buckets
2. Breaking Bad - it's like 1/10th as good the Wire.
3. Sex - there really are a lot of negatives.
4. Fixing Your Own Stuff -- what am I, a poverty person?
5. The concept of honor - It's a social construct meant to keep the average man in line.

How about calling an assist a "dime"

- The Iowa State Fair

Apparently if you live in central Iowa, you're supposed to love the fair so much you go multiple times each year. And if you don't, you're looked at like there is something wrong with you.

It's not just an Iowa thing. The Minnesota State Fair is a huge deal up here, too. If you don't get throttled when it's fair time, you're viewed with suspicion. Also, don't ever dare suggest the Iowa State Fair is better than the Minnesota. You will be charged with heresy and burned at the stake.

In no particular order:
  • Tailgating - Why go to all that work to do something I can do better and easier at home.
  • Social Media - I don't care about what other people are doing all the time and have no desire to tell other people what I'm doing.
  • Beaches - Love the ocean (or any body of water really) just don't care for beaches.
  • Beer - Never really liked the taste of it.
  • Standing at sporting events - When did never sitting down start anyway - the 90's? What a stupid idea.
I'm sure I could come up with a bunch more but these are the first ones that came to mind.

I use to be a fair hater and only went about once every 5 years. Right after leaving I would always ask myself "Why do I do this to myself?". For the last 4 years or so I've went every year and here is what works for me.

#1 Buy tickets online
#2 Call Uber and have them drop me off near one of the side gates
#3 Walk to the Iowa craft beer tent
#4 Drink for 3-4 hours
#5 Find something good to eat, which is very easy to do
#6 At this point it would probably be a good idea to come home but I usually go to one of the places next to the craft beer tent and watch people make fools out of themselves dancing or just people watching.
#7 Call Uber to take me home

It's kind of like tailgating with a big beer selection and great food.

Mostly stuff already listed like the state fairs, casinos, Las Vegas etc.

The only thing I can think of not listed yet is amusement park rides like roller coasters. Just not my thing. And horror movies, generally (with some exceptions) do not like the uncomfortableness of them but have friends that live for them including a guy who writes review and blogs on them. Oh, and living in Minnesota for 40 years I am supposed to like the vikings but do not.
