Friday 5: Guilty displeasures

I’m a little slow on the midnight trigger this week. Please forgive me. I'm not as organized with these things as @CycloneRulzzz.

List top 5 things people are “expected” to like, or at least are assumed to be viewed in a positive light.

So, if you say you dislike something, reactions could range from minor disbelief to outright derision.

Items on your list don’t necessarily have to reflect your personal view (you actually may like some of them, but can understand if others hate 'em). Ranking is optional this time -- it’s OK to list the 5 in no specific order.

After I thought about it a while, my list got longer than 5. I’m a bit feisty this week.

My 5 (unranked)

• Summer/popular summer activities
• Dessert (specifically pie)
• Christmas season (the secular stuff; faith is a separate matter)
• The Beatles. At odds with my view, but I don’t doubt sincerity of haters — wrong as they may be.
• National anthem "mandatory" at sporting events.

Note on my inclusion of national anthem -- I have no issue with it, but puzzled how it's largely tied to athletic events as a tradition. Football makes sense in a way, it's a "militaristic" game. I don't remember having it played prior to a track meet.

I had babies and dogs/pets in my list of finalists. Didn't think about Canadians, that's a fairly common "should like" category.

Apparently if you live in central Iowa, you're supposed to love the fair so much you go multiple times each year. And if you don't, you're looked at like there is something wrong with you.

I like Canadians. Solidified when I was in Basel, Switzerland and had no francs and the retired Canadian dentists paid for my coffee and treat at a patio cafe. Of course that was two years ago and before we declared war on Canada.

4. Fixing Your Own Stuff -- what am I, a poverty person?
5. The concept of honor - It's a social construct meant to keep the average man in line.
