TM, usually you're spot on, but this is insane.

Iowa has faced two defenses in KenPom's Top 50 this year and hasn't scored over a point per possession against either (Villanova is #3...i'll give you that) They're just beating up on defenses that they physically outmatch. Olaseni is shooting 6-17 against Top 100 teams this year.

For reference, ISU's team last year only scored less than a point per possession TWICE total in all of conference and NCAA tournament play and one of those was our 3rd matchup against KU. Now that's a dangerous offense.

At most I would say you have a dangerous offense against the Fairleigh Dickinson's of the workd.

This. I've never seen a fanbase or the pro-Iowa media cling to early-season numbers so hard.

Someone explain where the depth is so awesome ISU can't compare argument is based? Compare stats for scoring. From 1st down to 6th our players are outscoring their players. Our 7th player is scoring the same amount as their 7th. The only time it looks like they are deeper is if you look after the 7th players and color me not impressed by someone who plays for almost 21 minutes a game and only gets just under 6 points a game while shooting 37% from the field. OR someone who is playing 16 minutes a game and only pulling down 3.7 rebounds a game (Edozie plays 11 minutes a game and averages 3.6 rebounds).

And our stats are against better competition.

For what it is worth, our 11th and 12th players as as much better than their 11th and 12th players as their 8th and 9th players are than our 8th and 9th players.

What am I missing? Yeah, they have had 10 players play in all 11 games... but it is not like those 10 players are all lighting the world on fire. If Gesell, Woodbury and Clemmons are their claim to winning... nuff said.

A lot of those guys have gone for 15-20 points against quality competition in their careers. I'll grant you that it's difficult to take much from the schedule they've faced thus far. Which is why I'm not basing my assertion solely on this year's performance.

To argue that Iowa's level of quality depth isn't an extremely valuable asset, simply because ISU has fewer guys who combine for the same production, is just foolish. There's a reason that foul trouble ranks at or near the very top of everyone's concerns around here. A couple guys get in foul trouble for you guy, and things can get pretty dicey. Couple guys for Iowa get in foul trouble, they plug in another two guys without a huge drop off (in most cases).

I don't think the article was written by the Iowa athletic department because it says nothing about how Iowa almost won the "national title" last year.

I gotta disagree with you here. We had 3 starters dq'd at BYU, maybe our toughest test to date, and still won in a hostile environment.

Depth is a nice problem to have, but really, there's a reason the KU's and UK's of the basketball world have 5* guys sitting on their benches. It's not because those players aren't the caliber of Zach McCabe.

You lose marble to foul trouble you're toast.... You may have a good amount of average players but you have one difference maker and that's Marble. Iowa state has 3 or 4.....

This. Marble is the one guy I'm scared of because he can flat out go off. The rest of their guys are solid role players, but they're not going to take over a game. ISU has three guys that can take over a game, plus Hogue who is just as good as anyone on iowa's roster outside of Marble (similar to White and Basabe). Thomas and Morris are just as good of role players as most of iowa's guys. I will say that foul trouble could be an issue because I think that there's a drop off when Edozie and SDW come in, but I don't know that iowa's depth can really make them pay for it. It's not like they are bringing in major scorers off the bench...just solid players.

For the most part, I think that even though iowa has good height, a lot of their players are skinny and aren't going to be ready for how physical ISU is.

Just so everyone (Hawk fans) knows; Jok, Clemmons and Woodbury don't qualify as depth.

most teams in america would take 12 and 10 in 30 minutes from true centers that stay on the block.

I haven't seen Iowa play since we played them last year, so idk what to expect, but I suspect that our improved defense will make a big difference in this game.

Iowa was 4-5 last year (against B1G competition+ISU and Baylor) when Marble was held below 10 points. That's not much different than him getting in foul trouble and riding the bench. Three of those losses (@Wisconsin, @Minnesota and vs. MSU in the BTT) came by a combined 10 points. And he didn't even suit up for the MSU game in Carver last year, a game Iowa lost by 3 points. Not having Marble on the floor/effective certainly hurts Iowa, but they're hardly toast without him.

Tell me what McCabes, Basabe, Gessell career highs are? Do the same with Clemmons, Jok andThe Limey. Just for curiosity.

They've got six guys capable of going off for 20 points on any given night (Marble, White, Basabe, Uthoff, Gesell, McCabe) and three more capable of getting 15 (Olaseni, Clemmons and Jok). Makes it pretty tough to shut the offense down; I mean, you're not going to just ignore Marble and White if they're having an off night when Gesell and McCabe are hot.

Just so everyone (Hawk fans) knows; Jok, Clemmons and Woodbury don't qualify as depth.

I definitely disagree with you here. Clemmons is probably Iowa's best on-ball defender, definitely their best pure PG (by far the best on the team at running a fast break/transition). And he's not scoring a lot, but he's shooting 57% from the floor. He's been plenty effective when he looks to score.

He also had 14 points (5-8 from the floor, 2-3 from behind the arc) and 8 assists against ISU last year.

I'll give you Jok and Woodbury as not great/unproven depth. But Clemmons is an asset; he just plays at one of Iowa's best positions in terms of depth.
