Agree. SportsCenter thrived back in the day because that was a main way of getting scores and information.

Now people can get scores and highlights in real time online.
This. Sportscenter as a cultural touchstone is dead and buried. You might as well try to bring back the rotary telephone.
And you can argue that in the era of YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok, you don't need a dedicated television channel to deliver opinion content and analysis.

But, as of yet, none of those mediums broadcast games. That's where ESPN still has the edge on them, and where their ratings come from. It's still a very profitable company, and is going to be around a long time. But it's not going to look the same as it did in the 90s/early 2000s. Nothing in media does.

They have pivoted a bit and I think they will continue to do so. Rather than just showing highlights and results they show more of the postgame interviews and discuss impacts of the game. And like it or not, they talk about the results of the wagering. The late night Sportcenter with SVP is usually good especially following big days of sports or big events.

Personality goes a long ways. Sportcenter has just lost most of their good personalities. That’s what’s killing them, not YouTube and twitter.
 
Mike & Mike was watchable. Greeny is an arrogant idiot.
THIS IS JUST MY OPINION... Greeny uses that line every 2 minutes to backup whatever he's spewing. Him and Stephen A clearly get ESPN viewers by being loud. I think they both play it up alot but might have fallen into character over time.

They both suck and should be jettisoned along with Rece and Herbstreit.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. They could have a murderers row on SC and I’d never watch it.

My 12 year old son watches this guy on YouTube who breaks down every NFL game in pretty good detail with jokes in like 12 minutes recording himself in his basement. He never, ever watches sports center. He has in the past but has moved on like most of America.

Yeah for teen me decades ago I loved Sportscenter. I watched it every morning before going to school. I probably only watch now when it goes from a game to SVP and he then interviews a prominent athlete, live.

This. It's not like there's another network out there killing it with their own sports highlights show. The demand for that kind of format for consumption of sports news simply doesn't exist anymore. Twitter highlights hit almost instantly after a big play occurs. Statistics are updated online in near real time. Very few people need to flip on the television to see who won and lost anymore. There is still plenty of room for personality in Sports television, but it's in opinion/analysis shows rather than highlights shows.
And like it or not, the format that still draws interest, is the Hot Take show. Stephen A Smith, Colin Cowherd, Skip Bayless, Kendrick Perkins, etc. People love to talk about how much they hate these guys. But the fact that people are talking about them at all, is what's keeping them on the air. They're the classic Pro Wrestling Heels.
And regarding other formats like Twitter, TikTok, YouTube etc, if people think they're not a major competitor, they need to think again.
Sports content, even opinion shows, isn't consumed the same way that it once was, aka by watching a television channel. If Skip Bayless says something bombastic, the clips hit Twitter , TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, soon after and that's where many people are consuming it. Pat Mcafee built his brand on YouTube. Pardon My Take on Itunes. Social media is definitely a competitor.

Does the medium matter or will people search out the best talent regardless of where it comes from? If this YouTube guy announces he’ll do the same thing on SC this fall, would your son move on to the next YouTuber or would he tune into SC to watch this guy?

The medium absolutely matters. Why am I going to tune in to the 7PM Sportcenter on Sunday night, and wait through 30 min of other sports and other games, until they spend 45 seconds showing my favorite team's results, when I can go on Twitter, 4 hours earlier, and see a full highlight clip. Sportcenter lost its impact when it no longer was best way to get the information. Look at the rise of internet and smartphones and it corresponds very similarly with the decline of the sports highlight show.

Berman was great at it...but there was no other available source of info for what he did! That isn't the case anymore...I watch the highlights of NFL games on YouTube Sunday evening and get everything and more without sitting thru commercials and whatever...there isn't nearly the need for Sports Center like there was in the 80s-00s!

I am someone who used to LOVE the SportsMachine...but there is no place for that anymore as we can see whatever we need to see almost instantaneously!
 
I can't believe there are people that watch Stephen A Holesmith, Skip or most of these shows. Life is too short for 24 hour sports anyway.

What they need is an ESPN channel dedicated to showing the latest Twitter, IG, and Tik Tok showing game highlights on their channels. Kind of like NFL redzone for all sports.
 
90s and early 2000s Sportscenter was a cultural juggernaut I miss anchors like Stuart Scott who were exactly who they came off as and aren't playing some weird heel character

I’m not sure if he even knows this guys name. It just got served up to him based on what he watches on YouTube which is a bunch of highlights for the most part.

I haven’t watched an hour of SC in probably 10 years. 20 years ago I could watch the same episode 3 times in a row as they just replayed it.
