Had surgery to fix my double hernias today. Anyone had it done before? If so, what helped you the most getting through it. Going to the bathroom is a horrible experience.

Geez, good luck with that. Hope it gets better soon.

i hope you have someone there to help you with small things such as getting a snack or drink of water.

i had surgery in 2010 and i remember trying to not to watch anything funny or anything that would make me laugh because it would hurt my abdomen. get a liquid stool softener. i actually felt great the night of the surgery but felt like crap the following 3 or 4 days because the good pain meds wore off. don't be afraid to ask for meds if you need them. even if you don't feel like it make sure to switch up which side you lay on periodically. good luck

I've had hernia surgery twice. Left side about 10 years ago. That one was strangulated. The second time was on my right side and umbilical. The second surgery was laparoscopic and was easier to recover from. Hope you have some milk of magnesia. You'll most likely need it by Thursday.

I got some laxatives but haven't gotten the courage to see if they work yet. I'm just hoping I feel good enough to eat some turkey on Thursday!

Pain medication can make you constipated, so it's not a bad idea to take some milk of mag, or something similar. You don't want to wait until you are bloated and in a bind.

Very timely advice. Stool softeners are your friends.

As long as it was laparoscopic I think you'll be feeling ok by Thursday.
My first hernia surgery was also the Tuesday before Thanksgiving but they cut me open for that one. The recovery from a laparoscopic procedure is quicker.

Had it three times. The first time they did not put in a screen. Coughing and sneezing is the worst thing. Drops you to your knees.

Amazing the medical advances over the years. First time included a hospital stay of five nights. Second time was three nights. Third time was done with Novocain in an outpatient clinic. They told me to go walk the mall for a couple hours until the medication wore off. That was by far the quickest recovery.

Both of mine were outpatient but there was no way I would've been mall walking right afterwards. The electric recliner was awesome for the second. Just sit down and push the button to recline and snooze in front of the TV

I don't remember the experience anymore. I had a single hernia, then years later a double hernia. I think they put a gortex patch or something to hold things in place.
