Dom Nelson - The Defibrillator

It feels like he is in the doghouse for something not related to his play in game. He had a clear role to come in for a 4-5 minute stretch and spark the offense by attacking the rim. He did that very well for multiple games, see original posts. I'm not saying he should consistently get 10mpg but this was the exact type of game where we needed that spark.

I think him being bad on defense is way overhyped. Batemon was horrible on defense and TJ stuck with him and he's got significantly better.

Batemon was/is also a massively better shooter than Nelson

nelson is 0-5 from 3 and 25-44 from the FT line this year
oh and is awful on defense

There’s no clear role for him and Batemon is 10x the defender compared to Nelson. The book is out on Nelson. Rondo close out on him and contest at the rim.

Nelson not being a threat from 3 just kills his game. That works in high school but in college they know they can just sag and clog the lane on him. BasicallyTamin his freshman year

I agree with others in that Nelson provides the attacking ability we don't have except for Jefferson (who is a turnover machine). Nelson carved up Purdue. Painter gave him props after the game. Hope TJ gives him a chance. Tired of the talk of his defense sucks, that is why he doesn't play. Yeah but we need something different to beat the pressure defense. What I saw out of our play against Cincy and TCU (both crummy teams), doesn't bode well going forward.

The "book is out" on every single player on every single team. The book was out on Nelson last year on his way to POTY in his conference. In his 1 meaningful game in conference play against Oklahoma State, they knew exactly how to defend him and he quickly got 7 points and sparked a sluggish offense that day, which we really needed.

TCU is currently on the bubble.

Especially when we play high intensity defense. Guys are taking a break on offense. Clear as day. Need a deeper rotation.

If only we could play Oklahoma State at home every game. But yeah, he played more minutes against Kansas and Cincinnati than he did vs Oklahoma State and how did that work out for us?

Jefferson is definitely being asked to do too much in my opinion. Elite passer but not a great ball handler. We can run the offense through him and has proven that works but we need to put him in spots to be more successful.

Nelson turns the ball over at a higher clip than Jefferson.

Nelson is not the answer. He gives away anything he gets us. He completely nukes any spacing we have on offense, doesn't pass, and doesn't defend.

Agree with City on Jefferson being asked to do too much right now - he is incredible when he makes quick decisions, but having him dribbling 25 feet from the basket is not always going to yield great results. Would be great if Toure or Heise were a little more reliable attacking off the bounce in the half court, but just have to find ways to get guys in good spots.

I agree. Need to tweak that just a little bit. Still take advantage of his amazing abilities, but leave the ball in the hands of the guards a bit more.

I think a lot of of problems could be fixed getting Mommy the ball on the low block and having jefferson near the free throw line. Ran it twice last night and scored both time. Plus gives him the option at that baby dirk shot.

The two man game with those two is beautiful.

The book is out on him? He played well in his role until he stopped getting minutes. By that logic, maybe we should sit Milan too because clearly the book is out that he's a 3 pt weapon.

At least the Toure “best freshman ever at ISU” and surefire NBA player can be put to rest by talking heads. He’s great for a freshman, has exceeded expectations, fills a vital role on the team, and could develop into NBA player. But the dude has a long ways to go yet.
