I just heard the news that Tucker has been declared out for the season. West Virginia after losing to TCU tonight is now 1-4 since taking the Cyclones down in Morgantown.

I realize that DeVries doesn't have a lot to gain monetarily by tanking the season in and then jumping ship to swim back to the state of Iowa. I don't think WVU would fire him unless they were to lose out. But man, I have to wonder if I'm reading the tea leaves right here. Fran being done in Iowa City after this season is pretty much set in stone with the news of Freeman shutting it down early and not on the bench supporting his team in their most recent game. Things just seem to be lining up right for DeVries to come home and take his dream job, which evidently isn't Creighton.

We will just have to see how this plays out, I still doubt that EIU will can mad Fran and pay the buyout, and turn around and give DeVries a long term contract. Makes more sense to wait a year, be sure that DeVries is the guy you want and it lowers the buyout of Fran.

I doubt they will fire him, I also doubt he will be back. It would be easy to negotiate a deal for him to retire and save face.

Why would he take a lower amount than what the buyout would pay him? In other words, why walk away from that much money on the table. If he comes back and they win, he can finish out the contract, if it goes South, they fire him and buy him out. I get why EIU and their fan base would like for him to walk away, but what is it in for him, that he would not get even if they fire him.

Why does he have to tank to go to Iowa? Couldn’t he go there if he wins too?

Oh, I could see it happening. He seems checked out and would probably rather be in Indianapolis watching Butler play. I'm guessing Matta would hire him as some kind of analyst or special consultant. The thing is, yeah, he could drag it out and force iowa to pay the full buyout. But that's another year at least in IC. I could see him taking a reduced buyout to just move on. Like 75%.

He’s tanking at WVU so Iowa doesn’t offer him the job and he has to turn it down. Iowa is too big of a rebuilding job for any coach to be successful there. So he wants to keep the Iowa option open for the future, but doesn’t want to go there next year. So naturally, he’s torpedoing this season to make sure he’s not looked at as a viable candidate.

Iowa needs to come up with A LOT of money if they want DeVries for next season. Fran is under contract until 2028. While he could retire, he would be smart not to. He would be owed $4.2 million. Then they’d also have to buy out the WV contract for DeVries, which would amount to $4.6M.

So Iowa is looking to pay $8.8M to bring in DeVries next year. That’s a lot of money for a department that lacks the funds

No, the head coach at West Virginia is not actively tanking so he can soften the news and go to Iowa. West Virginia is also not going to fire their head coach after one year lol.

I'm trying to figure out how any prospective school looking for a coach would want someone who tanked their first season to go to...*checks notes*...Iowa.

Isn’t that just the buyouts though? You’d have to pay Devries on top of that.

True. Fran is making $3.4M this year. That would be eliminated with they buy out. I would expect DeVries contract to be somewhere in that same neighborhood, possibly as high as $4M. So one could argue Iowa would incur another $0.5M in additional salary

Matta will hang it up after this year. That program is terrible right now and i dotn even think he's made the tournament in 5 years since he's been back.
