DeVries tanking for Iowa?

Why do people think Devries wants to go to Iowa so bad? Because his brother played football there 30 years ago? He has no personal connection to the school.

Meanwhile he does have a connection at Creighton. So instead he could win at WVU and be positioned to take over Creighton after McDermott retires in a few years.

I just heard the news that Tucker has been declared out for the season. West Virginia after losing to TCU tonight is now 1-4 since taking the Cyclones down in Morgantown.

I realize that DeVries doesn't have a lot to gain monetarily by tanking the season in and then jumping ship to swim back to the state of Iowa. I don't think WVU would fire him unless they were to lose out. But man, I have to wonder if I'm reading the tea leaves right here. Fran being done in Iowa City after this season is pretty much set in stone with the news of Freeman shutting it down early and not on the bench supporting his team in their most recent game. Things just seem to be lining up right for DeVries to come home and take his dream job, which evidently isn't Creighton.

They have 2 or 3 of their best players out. They played above themselves for a long time. However, Talent is starting to show. In college you have no reason to tank a team. That would be weird. Although Some believe Steve Prohm tanked the Iowa State Cyclones to get back to to Murray State

It's pretty well known around the state he's a huge Hawkeye fan.

He could milk the hoks for a couple of years before getting the good job with the bluejays.

I'm sure a 50 year old guy that has coached elsewhere in the P5 is going to make a career move based on his fandom as a kid over 30 years ago.

To be honest. If I was coaching Kentucky and was doing good and Iowa State called, I would take the call and it would be a tough decision for me since I grew up a Cyclone fan. That is basketball. I would not come to Iowa State if I was at a blue blood for football though.

Yeah, I figure McDermott has a couple years at most left in Creighton. And that is a better job than iowa (or ISU for that matter). May not be in a better conference, but since it's a private school, they can pay whatever they want with no one complaining. And, with no FB program, their NIL money all goes to BB. DeVries has probably 2 years to get WV into the tournament and he can jump to Creighton.

Him tanking is a stretch......but to think he doesn't want to come back to Iowa is wrong. He wants back in this state as much as Fran wants out.

I can see Fran leaving for Butler and Devries coming to Iowa as soon as next year. The money isn't an issue and never is with these universities if they really want something done.

Look at it like West Virginia to him is what UNLV was to TJ. ISU was always the goal for TJ......just had to wait for the right time. Well, if Fran isn't back..........it will be Devries.

Oh, I could see it happening. He seems checked out and would probably rather be in Indianapolis watching Butler play. I'm guessing Matta would hire him as some kind of analyst or special consultant. The thing is, yeah, he could drag it out and force iowa to pay the full buyout. But that's another year at least in IC. I could see him taking a reduced buyout to just move on. Like 75%.
Patrick is done playing after this year, and his youngest son is suppose to be redshirting next season, so he would not be missing his games even if he stays another year in IC. If they fire him they would owe him 60% of the remaining contract paid out over the life of the contract, so the next three years. No way I see EIU paying him 75% of the contract for him to walk away, if they want to get rid of him and save money, then just fire him and pay the buyout, same result and its cheaper.

Even if he did want go to Iowa, why in the hell would he tank a season?

The rumors on the EIU and WV boards is the Devries and his entire family are life long EIU fans and his wife is not real happy in Morgantown. She misses her friends and family back in Iowa. Sounds like EIU is his dream job and will make his wife happy by moving back if its offered. Creighton is the better job, but there is no guarantee that Coach Mac is leaving anytime soon. If it opens down the road, DeVries could still take the EIU job for next year and then look at that job when it comes open.

Unless EIU goes winless and Mad Fran pulls a Prohm here, I would suspect that EIU will give him more season to right the ship and see if DeVries is the guy they want. It lowers the buyout by $1.4 million and also the payout to WV for DeVries that they will have to pay. Now if Freeman and Dix say they are out after the end of the season, that could change everything, but Fran is still recruiting like he is coming back next season, if he was finished, I doubt he would be spending all his time and energy recruiting kids to play for the next guy.

I mean he went to UNI so it's a given he's a Hawkeye fan.

I think this is spot on. While there likely is mutual interest between EIU and Devries, it just doesn't make financial sense to make the move after this season. EIU would be better off waiting a couple of years for the buyouts to lower and it would give EIU some more time to evaluate if Devries is the person they want to take over.

Except you're still a huge Cyclone fan without any other sports career conflict.

Compare a guy like DeVries who likely grew up a Hawk fan. But since then has been in basketball for over 30 years for various programs, some at the P5 level, none of them Iowa.

Just saying, he's been in the business for a LONG time. He's been a part of a few programs, at least two that are better than Iowa.

Not saying he couldn't end up at Iowa soon, or that he and his family don't really want to. But there are a lot of people that don't work in the business, that are fans, that still have the fans perspective only, that are associating childhood fandom as a driving factor for Devries making a decision about his career and life's passion. Seems really weird to me.

Ok, don't believe me then.
Believe what, that he and his family grew up Hawk fans? I'm sure they are since his brother played there and he grew up a couple hours from IC.

Believe that fandom of a mediocre program with **** fan support and little commitment to hoops is driving a career decision for a 50 year old man that has been in the sport for 30 years without any role at Iowa? Yeah, I'm skeptical.

That’s a lot of money for a department that lacks the funds.

I'm not disagreeing with you. The Iowa AD's finances are not an area of my expertise.

But how are they "low on funds" when they've got Big Ten TV money coming in?
