Derecho Claims and Information

Our adjuster is coming tomorrow:
Water damage on ceiling of garage (think it blew in from a vent)
water damage to some interior trim from water leak from windows
destroyed deck furniture
ripped screens
destroyed pull down sun screens on deck

We will see what they say....

Does anyone know what it takes for deck damage to be covered? I just replaced the legs on my deck in April and they now have splits since the storm. Our adjuster said that's normal wear and tear. Also have significant siding missing/damaged that I believe they under estimated but my siding contractor is confident he can justify all new siding.

Friend has Progressive insurance and the had one hole in their siding and Iowa insurance law is to replace all the siding.

I am calling BS on that. We had numerous holes in our siding from the hail storm and they just paid to replace the damaged portions since it could be matched.

We had a number of boards on the deck get pushed up from the air pressure under the deck. They gave us some for it but not much. All I did was screw them back down anyway.

That's not true. But, some policies will replace all because it's hard to match due to fading. Unfortunately, mine isn't one and I'm getting several pieces of siding:rolleyes:
I am getting new roofs on two properties and lots of new gutters. Damage on three cars. Still trying to decide if we're fixing those. Don't really want to but I'm worried about what happens if we get in an accident or something in the future.

Not true. Your friend probably had an endorsement on his policy to cosmetically match all the siding. It is NOT Iowa law.

my policy says no money on trees, and if they fall on something 500 max i think, maybe 1000
im with a more local insurance company out of des moines so hoping that money is gonna flow good, that happens sometimes with these things i heard from folks that have been around the block

got super lucky on the roof, i was in the queue before the storm

the house wrap and flashing around the windows is complete junk and needs fixed, sure whatever on the siding, but cant get to the house wrap without taking off the siding, then we might as well fix a poor install job and put up new siding while were at it, i have some 30 pictures in my emails and lots of details

We sort of caught a break in that a chimney we wanted off the roof anyway, fell off (and crashed through a different part of the house) and would cost $25,000 to replace. Instead of replacing it, we're doing siding over the entire house. Pretty excited about that.

Also, we had a $25,000 tree bill. That's for a single tree, but it was a monster and took a couple of days to get off our house.

the law on siding says "reasonable replacement", so it doesnt have to match perfectly from my understanding, but needs to be close, but my case is it will affect resale value if mixed and matched.

How much of your house is left? Chimney on a part of the house and a tree on another. Damn!! That sucks!!

Is there a certain amount insurance covers on a tree removal off a house? Our neighbors ash tree fell onto their neighbors car and garage. The ash tree trunk was almost complete gone from either ash bore or carpenter ants. Huge tree! Cost the neighbor $10,000 that was with getting a crane in to help take the limbs off. The car just had liability on it.

Are these tree companies just making a killing? I can't see how people can afford to pay especially when they want payment when finished. I am wait on a local tree service to bet back with me on my widow maker in my backyard. Interested to what taking the whole tree down cost compared to just getting the big branch removed.

Ha, believe it or not, the house is pretty well intact. It's 100 years old this year actually, so it's built really well. As for the tree removal, the insurance company had to pretty much pay whatever it took. The only "catch" is that they'll only pay $1,000 for the removal of trees. So, knowing that ahead of time, I had the removal company invoice accordingly. And yes, tree company's are making an absolute killing right now.

I am guessing it has slowed down a lot but especially in the two weeks or so after the storm countless companies were making over $20k a day a lot of it profit.

We had a pine that had a hanger up high that I asked the company that my neighbor have come take theirs down how much they would charge for it. Started at $1,800 but came down to $1,300. When they realized they would need to at least trim it to get the crane between the houses they came down to $800. I took it. Five minutes later it was down and cut up...

This anecdote is one reason I started this thread.

My son and I were stranded in our SUV on 380 in SW CR during the storm (whole other story).

Need to file a claim. Insurance wants their person to review it. And I of course want a body shop(s) near me to inspect it too. Their guy comes up from MO, told me it was a three hour drive. He tells insurance there is $2700.00 in damages (i internally roll my eyes).

Body shop, next day, fills out estimate of damages at $4700.00. So I share with local rep and insurance provider that the gap is concerning.

Today (five days after sharing the gap) insurance says $5100.00 and check is being mailed today. Closing out the convo and nearly doubling their first estimate.

This is wild. Doesn't make any logical sense to me ... but it isn't my industry.

You really find out how good your insurance is when it's claim time. Certainly not the cheapest policy, but I've never had any nickel and dime responses from State Farm.
My neighbor had a third party adjuster who subs for many of the big name companies and it was interesting to hear him him say how much they varied in response to the same type of claim. According to him, be glad you don't have All State.
