DB Nigel Tribune commits

I'm amazed at the posters that refuse to admit that 6 wins is sub-par.

6 wins is par, 5 wins is sub par.

I'm not sure what that has to do with the recruiting of the current staff though. Seeing as they've had 1 season where about 1/4 (half last years jr class) of the upper classmen were actually recruited by them.

Iowa State doesn't win with Freshman and Sophomores. And compared to 5-21 over the previous 2 seasons 6 wins is shooting birdies and eagles

I see your point, but going after guys with no other offers apparently is to say that other, just as qualified coaches were wrong in not going after a kid. I don't doubt CPR and Co. have a great eye for talent, but either we are finding guys no one else knows about or CPR is looking for something different than the majority of other coaches.

I think the latter is true. I think CPR is building the program around the blue collar work ethic he speaks of frequently. I think he is finding raw athletic ability added to a hard hat working mentality and building from there. Something many coaches won't likely do because they need to win and win now, or are in schools where you have the history to recruit beyond kids that have the potential to develop.

Much like what Fred Hoiberg pulled off this year, CPR is doing something that many coaches would not won't to do because they don't think it can work.

He may end up not being able to pull it off. But I have enough confidence in him to give him the benefit of the doubt. He's earned it.

no expert here, but aren't stars likely assigned based on interest? - or do these experts know all and see all? Hypothetically if Iowa and Iowa State show interest in an Iowa Kid - automatically 2 stars - Nebbie and Mizzou jump in and now its a 3 star, Michigan and a couple more and now you have a high 3 or even a 4. Pretty simple process in a state that only produces 10 or so high D1 players per year. Then Iowa State offers a couple kids from Texas and Florida they know about and apparently since no one else had offered yet they had no stars - even though there are dozens of prospects? Big deal, get over it already, sure we would rather beat some top programs for some top talent, but outside of beating Iowa for some recruits in state from time to time, it just doesn't happen that often. Gotta trust in the identify the talent early and develop it model. Its probably the best way to compete with schools that have better geography or more history

How many stars you have next to your name dont mean ****. It means you get more offers and more publicity by the big boys of media. Welcome aboard Mr. Tribune prove it on the field that is all you need to do. Glad to have you be apart of this Cyclone Family.

That reasoning is circular. A kid gets more stars because Texas and Florida offers, Texas and Florida offer because he is good, a kid gets more stars because he is good. Any way you want to order that you still come to the same conclusion-- kids with 4-5 stars are usually good. I'm not trying to say we should be pulling 4 or 5 star talent, but I would think we could compete with similarly situated programs rather than finding kids that, as far as I can tell, maybe 1 or 2 other mid-major schools have an interest in.

the 4.7 40 has to be wrong. I know a lot of guys that size that ran a 4.7 or better in the CR metro area high schools, that were no where near fast enough to play d-1 DB.

I prefer to think of it as linear:smile: - Iowa State targeted its prospect and got them to commit before others got in.

I am not one of those "Trust in CPR no matter what on every recruit" but I also think you have to look at the recruiting that has taken place thus far and agree we are better off now than when he got here. So what has changed? Mensa OC gone everyone else for the most part still here? Have to believe the recruiting hasn't gotten worse just based on a couple kids that didn't have stars when they were offered.

I for one am amazed at the posters on here that are good enough at football recruiting and coaching D1 talent that they know people such as:

Troy Douglas-Coached 0 star Tracey Porter into NFL DB.

Wally Burnham- FSU National Title. South Carolina D-Coord. South Florida-made relavent. Coached 2 Butkus award winners.

and Paul Rhoads

are all wrong about our recruits and who we should go after. I for one think they seem to have a good handle on what they are doing.

At least I did, until you guys looked at a web page that simplified the ability of players into a brilliant 0-5 star rating system. Rivals if they rated coaches would likely put Paul Rhoads at a 1 star and Charlie Weis at a 4.5 stars. I'd rather have PR be the coach at my alma mater, but if there were some authoritative source to rank him on a 0 to 5 scale I'd absolutely go with that instead of an evaluation of his abilities, ceiling, and performance.

Sorry diamond dave we will have to agree to disagree

It doesn't have to be all about speed.....He won't be running in a straight line every single play for 40 yds....

That's cool Terry. I'm not predicting a 10-2 season like Diamond Dave would. I think we're going to end up at 6-6 this year plus or minus one.

Having realism that our budget is one of the smallest in the big 12, our history in football is among the worst in the BCS and that 5 star recruits don't choose Iowa State over Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Ohio State, and LSU isn't exactly pumping rainbows and unicorns up your ***. Hell, we can't even bowl in a stadium.

Get a grip on reality guys. The fact that people are shocked that our recruiting class doesn't all have 3 or 4 stars by their name because of our recent success is a testament to just how ****** things were here at the end of Mc and All of Chiz's time here. We have improved from ****** to average. We still need to go from average to good before you guys start seeing what you are expecting. And by then you'll all think we need all 4 and 5 star recruits I'm sure.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we should be pulling all 3-4 stars. But I think it is troubling that we seem to be pulling guys whose only exposure is a video their cousin shot and threw up on their Hudl account. Maybe I am placing too much trust in the Rivals/Scouts/ESPN folks but I guess I don't think its too much to expect that the recruiting experts have at least heard of these kids. CPR is a professional and in his time here I've yet to find a reason to doubt him-- so we will see how it goes. I'm sure he knows what he is doing.

Okay, so it's now apparent that CPR has actually Run out of Bass...so he's gone fishin' for the Independence Day Week.

Welcome aboard, Nigel!

(phone rings)
Nigel Tribune: Hello?
CPR: Hi Nigel, this is Paul Rhoads from Iowa State University. Was wondering if you would like to play defensive back for us this year
NT: Goddamit Tolburg, I'm hungover, my knees hurt and if you are going to pull this **** at least you could say you were from Oklahoma

I lol'd

Keep in mind guys stars aren't everything even on CF, I mean look at my sig. I was highly rated coming out of HS, great words per minute speed and high rep per post but tanked once I got in the big leagues of CF.

Welcome Nigel, pumped to see you shut it down on the edge!!

He'll at least be a 2* by the time the dust settles. Same as:

Collin Bevins (who Shane was raving about)
T.J. Mutchershon (who Rhoads said could be our best safety that he's had)
David Irving
Jevohn Miller
Aaron Horne
Tom Farniok
Albert Gary
CJ Morgan
Deon Broomfield
Jake Knott
Josh Lenz
Jacques Washington

Just for a few examples.

Seriously, were these guys 1 star (or no star) recruits? If so, you make a great point. Some of these guys are absolutely great.

Think any other school would be willing to offer a scholarship to Jake Knott now? We want to be the school that makes an offer when we actually have an opportunity to get him.

Nigel...welcome to the Cyclone Family and looking forward to some solid play from you over the next 4-5 years. Enjoy the ride.
Go Cyclones !
