Darian DeVries

If by "far better grasp" you mean in evaluating Prohm's coaching ability? No I don't agree. Pollard can evaluate in terms of wins and losses, and team culture, but not knowledge of basketball. He doesn't possess it.
He hired Prohm over others chiefly because he wanted someone non-authoritative, and laid back like Fred, who wouldn't get in the face of players or demand full defensive effort. In other words, nothing like Floyd or Eustachy.
Pollard didn't want the holdover stars rebelling and leaving. He wanted continuity in terms of style.
And here we are.
You do remember that JP was most likely hiring TJ and then leath intervened and Prohm was hired?

Just curious if we need to throw out the Football season & what was accomplished? Just basketball?

The only thing I can add to this discussion is that when making a determination on the direction of the program, throw this year out. Throw. It. Out.

Generally
That's my $0.02. Carry on.

I remember hearing that when it happened. He wanted TJ, Leath told him to hire a coaching search firm(which he also ended up using again for football)

That was the speculation, considering TJ had just come back to ISU a couple months earlier (to take Abdelmassih's spot?) when everyone knew Hoiberg had one foot out the door. But I don't know that it was reported Leath demanded a search firm be used, although CBS had reported on friction over the process between Leath and Pollard.

A Google search about the subject does find comments from Leath, but probably because he was asked about it during the press conference for the Board of Regents in June so it was news. He did say JP would present him with candidates and he would interview them all alongside JP. Otz was definitely mentioned from the beginning as JP's preferred hire, though.

My reference was in terms of culture. Talk to any successful veteran coach, and the first thing they will tell you is that more important than X's and O's is that the players like you and will play for you. If they don't, you're toast. That's what sank McDermott, and had he followed anyone other than Wayne Morgan, his tenure here would have ended differently. The well was poisoned because the players were pissed that Pollard skipped Morgan for some no-name mid major white guy they felt was unqualified.

Pollard should be able to figure out any cultural problems by watching practices and hanging around the program...things for which we as message board stalwarts don't have the opportunity.

If you're going to quote me, don't parse my statement and take it out of context. We returned a veteran football team this year. Had we returned a veteran basketball team, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

He's been as good if not a better recruiter than Hoiberg...at least talentwise.

If I could wave my magic wand and disabuse this board of some dumb thing that keeps getting repeated it would be this. He's going to be the coach for 3 of the worst seasons in modern ISU Basketball. If you are as good of a recruiter as a guy who missed the tourney 1 time in 5 years and was never lower than an 8 seed in the tourney you are literally the worst x's and o's coach in the country.

Well, my main point of contention with him is that he was on staff with GMAC, just like T.J here. However, unless I am mistaken he was hired by Altman and was at Creighton before GMAC. So for me....that would make him my choice over T.J. Other than that I really haven't followed him at all. He is tearing it up at Drake. He's worth a look. I think him, T.J., Scott Nagy and Craig Smith are all worth a look.

That correction is correct. He was never here at ISU.
He's had successful runs with different styles of coach. Definitely worth a look.

Hate to interrupt all this great Hoiberg/Prohm/TJ banter in the DeVries thread, but am I the only one who wants to know why Land Shark doesn't believe DeVries would come here???

Might of been him, but a few people claim he has told people that.

Which it’s pretty common for a coach to say they aren’t leaving until they do leave. Kind of a bad look to tell people you’re leaving then not get the job lol

It was my understanding that Leath insisted Pollard use the same search firm that got Leath hired.

Leath was always kind of a shady guy like that. Glad he's gone.

Just one point of contention here, because otherwise I mostly agree with you here, but Fred's '13 team was a 10 seed. Absolutely crushed #7 seed Notre Dame in the first round, and then 'effing Aaron Craft happened.

Interesting take by some Cyclone fans that Prohm is a solid recruiter because he has put more players in the NBA.

Last time I looked, basketball is a team sport! The goal of a coach isn't to recruit great players, it is to recruit a great roster. That means recruiting great players and great roll players. It means filling specific rolls - a PG that can QB the team, shot blockers, rebounders, defenders, shooters, scorers (there is a difference), hustle guys, etc. And that doesn't account for bringing in guys with varied personalities.

Since we are in a Darren DeVries thread, I will bring it full circle. How many players on Drake's 17-0 roster were recruited by ANY Big 12 team? Probably ZERO. How many players will play in the NBA? Probably ZERO. It's about building a roster, not the individual players. Sure it's great to have a Halliburton, Horton-Tucker, Morris or Niang. But teams that compete for Big12 titles go 7-8 players deep- each filling a roll.

Based on Prohm’s track record, when will he return a veteran team?
