Cyhawk postgame thread

To be honest outside of 1 drive, a couple bad mistakes are what kept this game close. The muffed punt and the penalties giving them fresh downs, really is the only reason this game was not a 2+ score win.

But that is how this game goes. This year we are good enough to handle those types of mistakes. In years past there were more mistakes that we could not come back from.
Encapsulates what I thought ... numerous CyHawk games (and others), with how this game unfolded, ISU would've lost most of the time.

Im not one to questions coaches but why did we go away from Hansen in Q2 and Q3 for Sama.

Hansen is our back. Feed him.

I swear...
Sama had 47 yards on 12 carries with a long of 11 yards
Hansen had 46 yards on 11 carries with a long of 11 yards

The difference between the two was practically negligible on the game... but people act like Hansen was heads and shoulders above Sama.

Haven't seen it mentioned a ton but I felt like the Ireland travel might be hitting. 3 straight weeks of intensity and being ~12 days since traveling across the world. I don't think we wore down per se but sputtered a bit in the late 1st half and 3rd quarter.

With that said, picking up the flag on perhaps one of the most clear running into the punt returner penalty flags in the history of football - and no, our guy didn't push their guy into our guy - changed every ounce of a momentum in that game. I truly believe had the officials not somehow picked up the flag (something I will wonder about on that specific play for the rest of my life) - we would have gone down and scored to make it 13 to 0, and the boat race would have been on. I sincerely believe that that specific call and that specific timing changed every aspect of the game. Picking up the flag in the manner they did was egregious and quite intentional. And because they picked up the flag, there was no penalty, and thus there is no record or history of it happening in no accountability whatsoever. A very, very, very sneaky way to directly and meaningfully impact a game. And it almost worked. F*ckers.

F*cking f*ck Iowa. Tougher for longer baby!

Iowa holding the ball for 30-some plays, 160-ish yards, and 10 points sandwiching an Iowa State 3-and-out would have sunk many a Cyclone team of years past, let alone a punt returner running into somebody and giving Iowa the ball (hello 2019) or only getting 6 points out of two excellent early drives (too many examples to count).

Eskildsen and overby are both elite at getting open (Rocco throws an immaculate ball as well). But they are just 2% not as good as Higgins and Noel when it comes to contested catches and reliability of hands. Such little things but make a huge difference in a game and is the difference between solid P4 receiver and NFL guy. If those 2 can improve on the hands (esp. Overby) I don’t see why they couldn’t make the league.
You're right but today Rocco was just slightly off. Two deep passes were only contested because the throws were slightly off

Especially when Ferentz hasn't come even close to building the coaching tree that Fry did. When Fry retired it was "next man up", and that was Ferentz. They don't have that this time around.
Parker is young (in comparison).

Yep, they wasted years trying to groom his son, but that was a disaster, and Phil Parker is too old and never seemed to have the desire to be a head coach. They'll be hiring from outside.

Overby had some drops today but did Eskildsen have any? How many targets did Esk have? Would have liked to have seen more.
