Cyhawk postgame thread

To be honest outside of 1 drive, a couple bad mistakes are what kept this game close. The muffed punt and the penalties giving them fresh downs, really is the only reason this game was not a 2+ score win.

But that is how this game goes. This year we are good enough to handle those types of mistakes. In years past there were more mistakes that we could not come back from.

The play where Gron got stoned and they gave him a first down anyway was almost like a turnover too. They're either punting or a super high risk fourth down when they had just gotten stoned on 3rd.

That was at least as fortunate as our deflected caught pass. Matt is right if that's what he's talking about.

Also side note, how is it that everyone I know who is a Hawkeye fan never went to Iowa? All Cyclones fans I know are diehards who actually went there.
Totally understand where you're coming from. However I'm a diehard Cyclone Fan who is a UNI Alum. My wife is a diehard Cyclone Fan & she's an Iowa Alum. There are some of us out there believe it or not.

I don't think that is what happened. Why would any coach decline that? Makes no sense. Is it possible that the penalty was half the distance from the 10, where the returner fielded the punt?

That’s exactly the reason. Penalties while the punt is in the air are enforced at the end of the kick. Usually you just don’t lose 7 yards on the return your team holds on. Thats why you rarely see that penalty declined.

Did I miss something or did they not even mark off the penalty against Iowa after Wetjen was tackled at the 5?
I wondered that too. I know Gus and Joel are the #1 team but they don't do a great job of explaining things sometimes. Maybe I missed it but why was the penalty flag picked up on the Hok kickoff return?

This has probably been answered, but there is too much to keep up on. The last Iowa drive... Was the coverage that good or was Gronowski too gun shy?

Lack of receiver contributions are a big issue and they need to start catching the ball for ISU to produce.
IDK what the hell Heacock was doing at the end of the half when Iowa scored.
Mouser didn’t boot or have any misdirection today to help Rocco.
Played like Iowa for most of today and it’s brutal to watch. We have a good quarterback and no receivers to get open or catch the ball.
Campbell has a big set of rocks for that fg- if missed Iowa can run the ball a few times and try a gw field goal.
Phew. I need a Tylenol.

Most of the most pertinent mistakes weren’t even our doing, just unfortunate calls

I thought we had a decent talent advantage. Hang on to the TD in the first quarter and take away the refs gifting Iowa 10 points, and we likely pull away imo. Our defense with Iowa forced to pass probably gets another TO
