Curtis Jones Not Even Honorable Mention

I am not sure I agree. These are individual awards, and they do have a really good starting 5 - perhaps the best in the conference. They just have no depth.
Agree. I think Dickinson lead the league in scoring and rebounding. Hard to argue with that. McCullar is also pretty damn good. It’s unusual to have 2 first-teamers and finish that low in conference but depth and injuries make a difference with Wins and Losses.

I am surprised about McCullar just because he hasn't been the same since he got injured and missed a ton of time. But maybe voters just thought well when he was healthy he is a first teamer.

Benefit-of-doubt/devil's advocate regarding McCullar - perhaps the logic was: "Obviously a high-impact when healthy, KU finishing lower than expected shows how valuable he is."

Caveat - I'm not sure what KU's record is in games he didn't play or played limited minutes.

Also not sure if the above theoretical warrants 1st team inclusion, but that's a separate discussion I s'pose.

Nearly forgot we had a 2-fer that season.

ISU tied for 3rd that season (4th seed in B12T on tiebreaker).

They were undeniably top 5 players though (Ejim and Kane), just works out that way.

I think these teams are going to get harder and harder with 16 teams. The answer it to probably make room for even more honorable mentions. It's really weird to me Sharp from Houston gets no mention, he was easily one of the most tough and clutch players we played all season. The guy is an absolute tank on both ends and scored over 12ppg on the #1 team in the nation.

I didn't keep a log of other freshman in the Big 12, but seems a bit shocking to me that Momcilivic finished first team all freshman. He has been unplayable in stretches during the back 9 of league play.
I disagree that he's been unplayable for the last 9 games. He's certainly not shot as well or as often as earlier in the season, but he has still contributed. I hope this week gives him a chance to get his legs back a little bit, along with his confidence.

Pretty sure Houston was picked near the top so give Sampson CoY because he did what was expected of them, ok.

Can't remember where we were picked but it was probably nowhere near 2nd.
Not a snub for Sampson. He did that not only replacing several starters from the previous season, but also losing several key players via injury during the season. Tip of the cap to him.

Unplayable? Guess TJ disagrees with you as he played the second most minutes on the team in conference and for the year, 2nd only to Gilbert. He clearly became a focal point for the other team to shut down as they were super physical with him especially the last half of the conference season. He was an important part of spreading the floor. Will give you that his 3 pt % went down during conference season.

If they give him space he can be the piece that makes us a lot better than last year. If they take him away our offense can look like last year if one or two of the three guards isn't having a great night.

I think he might have a breakout game or two in NCAA.

I think the improvement in his game during the off-season will be strength-based so he isn't so impacted by the physical play. It will help his defense, offense and rebounding, and I think you will see his shooting % go up as well.

Not a Kelvin fan in any way, shape, or form... but that was a great, classy quote. Don't disagree that he is arguably as worthy as TJ, but that's the right way to handle it.

I'm fine with Sampson getting Big 12 and National Coach of the Year.

They had one of the best regular seasons of all time when you account for the Big 12 being so deep, and finished the year a very easy #1 vote looking like the most dependable team if you had to bet your life on a team in one game. If he can't win we're basically saying the coach of the best team can never win an award.

I think there are some easier than usual criticisms of the players in the various player awards though and not just ISU.

Really should have been 6th man aswell, the guy from BYU is 3rd on the team for minutes and takes the most shots
He was the one I thought might get it over Curtis. Does have good numbers. Iowa State's slower pace and lower scoring probably hurt CJones on this.

I don't disagree he's worthy. BUT, they were preseason ranked #7 in the country, we were projected to finish 7th in the Big 12. We didn't do much worse than them in league play. Considering how deep the Big 12 is (this may even be the deepest year ever), they ended slightly above expectations while we demolished them.

Might be a dumb question but why do the other conference have more than 5 on their first team?

SEC had 8
Big East had 6

Didn’t check the other conferences.
