CR Gazette Article on Coaching Search

I realize that but the point still stands it's not substantial even when you look at the amount we increased to get the new track coach compared to the old coach.

Not only does a wrestling coach cost less than football or basketball as others pointed out, from past coaching searches, I'm not sure people like JP think creatively or big enough.

Look at Kevin Dresser's bio at Virginia Tech. If Dresser replicated that kind of success in Ames it is easy to imagine meet attendance increasing, perhaps substantially. And I don't know how big the camps are in Ames right now, but it is easy to imagine not just greater meet attendance, but much better camp attendance and camp money coming in. Dresser is from north central Iowa, and in Virginia, as a former high school coach, has significant ties to the high schools there. It is easy for me to imagine him similarly reaching out to Iowa high schools, and replicating those kinds of inroads with high-school-age and younger kids here.

With someone like Dresser, I just don't see why that is so hard to imagine as possible. It is possible for others, but objectively, less likely for candidates without a similar record or name.

Before Gable (and Carver $$$), Harold Nichols and Les Anderson were pioneers with their wrestling camps. What Gable and many others have done now, I believe was first done at ISU.

As many know, Iowa Public Television for many years televised the ISU-UI meet along with a few others, before the advent of cable and more television stations in more recent years. I'm pretty sure that when IPTV first started doing that, the series was titled "Cyclone Wrestling."

Maybe it is impossible for JP to get the kind of top name that IMO would be best. Like others here, I will accept others as head coach -- but only if the very best efforts were made to get one, or more, of the very top candidates, but were unsuccessful. At the very least, I hope JP establishes greater goodwill with the wrestling community through this search process.

Attendance depends mostly on performance on the mat. JP and others, however, I 'm afraid may lack the knowledge and understanding of what is, perhaps, realistically achievable.

The hard feelings were more between Bono and KJ than Bono and ISU.

I like Bono just fine and his guys compete hard, but between his 3 years at UTC and his 4 years at SDSU he has only coached two all-americans. I'd feel a lot more comfortable if his teams had better NCAA results.

How many AAs did they have prior to his arrival?

How high did they finish nationally prior to his arrival?

They've gotten much, much better under Bono. I didn't argue they haven't. I suspect he'll get atleast 1 more AA this year to add to his tally.

Still don't feel comfortable hiring a coach with little NCAA tournament success, even if he is at a school with less resources and tradition than ISU.

Hearing that Bono might be the guy. Think its a good get....Has done a great job at SDSU and generated a ton of excitement for them. Having watched their dual with Iowa, almost all of his guys were ready to wrestle even if most were outmatched...and they wrestled hard. If he get transfer that to more talented guys, going to be some good times at ISU.

Having lived through a few of these with JP, if you are hearing that Bono might be the guy, I get the feeling he is most likely not the guy.

By no means am I saying you are wrong, but with a JP coaching search there is always smoke and mirrors involved.

Please don't let this stop you from posting any info you have in the future, however. We are getting so little of it as it is.

The very real benefit of getting an already known coach is they typically bring their best wrestlers with them. Iowa and PSU both won multiple titles that way.

If I'm Pollard that's obviously not my only consideration, but it's in the top 5.

I watched some of the SDSU and Utah Valley (who recently beat NDSU--who beat us earlier this year) match this weekend. At 125 Ben Gillette (SDSU) was behind the whole match then pulls off a freight train double leg w/5 seconds left to win it. Then, at 133, Seth Gross pinned his opponent--his second on the weekend. When Gross pinned the Oklahoma wrestler (Friday night?) it gave SDSU the win. My point in all this is to say that SDSU is wrestling with a lot of gusto and determination of the sort we haven't see much of this year.

Bobby Douglas refused to do that when he left ASU, so I think it depends more on the coach. Sanderson and Brands are high profile examples of it though.

Obviously, none of us know exactly what happened there, so its not fair to say they told the kids to come. Could of very well been a case that they told the kids that they were leaving and the kids said they wanted to follow.

David Taylor is on record as saying he was only going to wrestle for Cael Sanderson. I am not saying one way or the other, but in most sports you do participate for the coach. I think wrestling stresses that even more which is why wrestler will tend to follow their coach.

Interesting that the DM article has a different list of guys. Some mentioned like Bono, Paulson, Perry and some I haven't heard much about like Pariano, Varner, Mitchell and Reader (as a head coach).

Then some I have heard talk about and not mentioned like Dresser and Hahn

It's safe to assume that if Jon Reader returns as head coach, my wife will be getting season tickets, with or without me.

Don't know if he is ready, but certainly think Reader could make an outstanding HC someday. If it's not for us, I assume it will be somewhere else soon. He is an outstanding young man.

Do these places actually have reason to believe they are legit options, or are they likely just spit balling?
