CR Gazette Article on Coaching Search

ISU better be will to open the checkbook for a top prospect coach, or otherwise not even worth trying to keep the team if you're just settling for mediocrity. Just my opinion though.

Dumb comment. We can't drop a sport and stay in D1.

He shouldn't have to "open the checkbook." KJ was a well paid HC in the wrestling world. HC pay isn't an issue.

My point was that ISU used to be a blue blood in the sport. Nowadays not so much. If your not willing to commit to the sport by going after the top tier coaches or put money into the program and commit to being a blue blood in the sport, then there's no point keeping the program alive.

IF Bono, or Dresser, or Pops would be the coach what does his recruiting class look like this year?

National qualifiers from SDSU since Bono has been there:

2012-13 = 1
2013-14 = 3
2014-15 = 3 (1 made Round of 12)
2015-16 = 5 (2 made Round of 12)

This year the team has an InterMat ranking of 17 and has 5 wrestlers ranked (1 is ranked #2).

To me, this is impressive growth for a mid-major program. He's bringing in good recruits, developing them, and now beginning to see results.

And now I see that SDSU just beat Oklahoma 20-19 (actually was tied 19-19, but SDSU wins on criteria). I think this means that SDSU is the second best dual team in the Big 12.

To me this just adds to the argument that Bono should be a serious consideration for the job.

I'd like Jaime to watch the checkbook on this one. It's nice when it's good, but unimportant in the grand scheme.

I think you're wrong on this. Like someone else stated earlier, wrestling will always be a net negative, but the fans are there to close the gap on that. You may spend more but lose less.

Mike Zadick is the coach that should get a serious look. He is a recruiting machine who loves to develop young talent. He cares about the wrestlers and not himself. He is as well connected as anyone in the sport (his brother Bill is the coach for Team USA). He was a World Team member multiple times and was a 2006 World silver medalist. He was the one who made the difference at Virginia Tech helping them to their highest finish in history last year - 4th. There is NO love lost between himself and Tom Brands. He makes things happen and is all about doing things right.

I think it's going to be Bono, which I'd be fine with, but I hope we get Reader too. Sounds like SDSU would be going hard after Reader for their head coaching job though if Bono left. Getting both of them to ISU would be a homerun though IMO.

Bono has done a great job at SDSU, but hadn't he burned some bridges with us? I thought that was why he wasn't really being considered.

In my opinion Dresser, Cunningham, and Pops should be first and everything vetted to try to get one of them to ISU. Even Smith too. Then if you can't get them by opening up the checkbook then Bono.

Paulsons should be a last resort. Good guys but they've been part of the culture over the last few years that hasn't gone well. This team needs a reset.

I assume you mean Cunningham or Cody Sanderson, not Covington. If not, who is Covington other than the Boise State ??? wrestler

Yeah thanks buf. I was going to ask who Covington is but kept thinking there was some obvious answer that I wasn't thinking of.

The hard feelings were more between Bono and KJ than Bono and ISU.

I like Bono just fine and his guys compete hard, but between his 3 years at UTC and his 4 years at SDSU he has only coached two all-americans. I'd feel a lot more comfortable if his teams had better NCAA results.

True, but we had all better face the fact that JP is NOT going to open up the checkbook for a wrestling coach. I'm not saying he should or shouldn't, but the fact is... he isn't going to do it.
