COLUMN: Let's just enjoy the season

Just 20 years ago our average attendance was 35000. Last year it was 57000.

I can remember in the early to mid 90's they'd have 4-H day and literally anyone involved in 4-H could get free or really cheap tickets. You could have an entire row to yourself.

there's one key fanbase demographic that hasn't been mentioned, maybe due to their lower representation on CF. and that is people today that are 65-80 yrs old, who started to support iowa state and attend games when there wasn't tv/internet coverage. people who in their 30s/40s packed Hilton under Orr and loved watching iowa state make its first tourney in forever (while the hawks absolutely destroyed us annually in football).

today these people are still diehard fans, attend all the games, and in many cases are now major donors.

football just wasn't as big of a deal in the 80s/90s. now with realignment and $$'s involved, all of those fans stepped up and increased donations/season tickets, etc.

Liked the write up...I disagree that fans can change the narrative on where ISU stands as a destination.

It will take a coach doing lots of great things consistently, and then staying.

The very reason other teams' fans won't listen to that narrative is because there's not many coaches who have stuck around.

On the buyout.......the original buyout was incredibly high. I literally hadn’t not heard of (although I’m sure there are some) a contract where it was the terms of the contract. The new buyout is higher than I could hope for too.

I’d encourage you to find a contract with a similar buyout. I bet it would be hard. Remember the buyout for firing a coach is different for them leaving.

Different sport but hoibergs buyout was 2 million for college and 500k for pros. Nothing near what Campbell’s is.

I realize the buyout is really high by normal standards, but isu is also in a very unique position with a lot of other teams are suddenly are interested in hiring their coach.

This is absolutely the most accurate breakdown I've ever seen/heard, explaining ISU fans. You completely "GET" the ISU fan base, not that I ever had any doubts about that, but this put the explanation mark on it!!! And P.S., I'm only 47, but I'm definitely part of the older group. Great passion in everything you do, thanks Chris!

Great job Chris!!

I'm 58 and will probably have a deep hatred for Hawk fans till I die. For a long time my desire for ISU football was simply not to s**k.

Now my picture of heaven to to reach a point where even the most ignorant TavernHawk will acknowledge that our program is in better shape.

How can someone that is 47 be in the older group? We are going to need more groups.

I suppose I'm a McCarneyeite.

Growing up in Western Iowa in the 90's I never saw a Hawkeye fan, only Huskers, and barely knew Iowa existed until I started ISU in 2001. Now when I go back to my parents I see lots of Hawk fans, all the Husker stuff is gone.

But starting at ISU we had some great seasons, so I got used to that. And with Larry in MBB. Got used to that too.

So I'm old enough to see some bad times turn to good. Good times turn to bad. And hopefully back now.

Your forgot those of us who were molested by Uncle Eugene.

THINGS CAN ALWAYS GET WORSE!

That was a great homecoming game my junior year.

Colt McCoy was playing catch in the backyard...

Two things:

Don't forget McCoy rushed for another TD.

That was Family weekend. The following game was Homecoming against OU. The team showed up for that game and only lost 17-7. ISU lead 7-0 at the half and many of us in attendance dared to actually believe there was hope.

This reminds me of something I often pondered in that era.

Is it better to have a game like UT, where we are clearly out of it in the first few minutes, just so we know where we stand and can have fun in other ways?

Or is it better for Lucy to put the football down and then pull it away from us -- like we did with OU in challenging a very good team led by Sam Bradford?

The obvious answer is neither.
