Coach Jerry Kill retires immediately

Okay throwing this out there now... kill takes the rest of the year off. Gets his health under control.
Idk, I just have a feeling hell want to get back into coaching. I would be absolutely ESTACTIC if Pollard hired him. I really hope he can get his health under control. He's too good of a coach and man to not be jn the profession.

That's kind of a silly thought. If he takes the rest of this year off, with his existing staff still at Minnesota, why wouldn't he just go back.

He "retired" for a reason.

Sad news - Kill is a great coach and that's a big loss for Minnesota. Thoughts and prayers to him and his family!

In considering possibly competing against MN for a coach & taking off the rose color glasses, I really wonder which job would be more attractive to potential coaching candidates.

MN has a nicer stadium (though we significantly closed that gap), a little easier recruiting opportunities (if they could convince MN kids to stay home). Overall, MN has had more success than ISU, historically, but don't think that's a significant difference at this point. MN is the only P5 team in the state.

ISU has nicer facilities overall, plays in the Big XII (I think that's a slight edge, but conference stability might make that neutral). ISU has much better fan support and doesn't compete locally against pro teams for "attention" (MN struggles filling a 50K seat stadium). I think ISU has a better and more supportive Athletic Department and overall University Administration.

Again - I personally can't think of a reason a coach would want to go to MN, but trying to look at it objectively, it seems like a pretty level playing field.

What other considerations did I miss?

ISU

I think you're overestimating the effect facilities have on potential coaches. And as others have stated, Minnesota is taking steps to update their facilities.

Minnesota has a chance to win a lot of games in the Big 10 West division. That's way more than ISU has to offer. Even with MN kids leaving the state there is way more local talent to recruit.

Jerry Kill actually has the program in a decent place right now too.

There are tons of reasons that coaches would want to go to Minn over ISU.

it sounds like his health issues flare up when under stress. I highly doubt taking a brand new job will help that.

i always see the "fan support" thing pop up when posters mention plus's for ISU coaching candidates. in the big scheme of things unless your boasting a 90k+ stadium and are a natl brand 99% of recruits and coaches could care less if you have kansas FB type support or Wisconsin type support. Miami FL and Stanford are great examples of this, they had/have very crappy local support but are in a talent rich areas and have a Natl name brand thus they get recruits from everywhere wanting to go suit up for the U or the TREE. South Carolina has traditionally had great fan support but it wasn't til Spurrier came that they got lifted off the ground the same way with baylor and TCU (very little support, great recruiting, great coach). Its all about the recruiting pool and schedule to attract coaches. if either is too hard of a hurdle then most upper level candidates will just look elsewhere no matter how much fan support you have, obviously unless you have one of those 90k seat stadiums or are a natl brand (oregon).

Minnesota has a better recruiting pool and more of a natl brand than ISU thus the pro teams/poor fan support thing just wont provide any benefit to ISU over Minnesota.

There's no question that right now ISU has better facilities than Minnesota. Their facilities are abysmal. But the University is breaking ground this Friday on the $150 million Athletes Village, which will equal anything in the Big Ten. Kill was instrumental in the fundraising, and it's interesting that he held on until the Board of Regents gave the final ok a couple weeks ago. If he'd resigned before then, who knows how the Regents would have voted?

Might be an opportunity for him to stay engaged via some special position in fund raising for Minnesota. Less stress and chance for him to get healthy while staying engaged in sports.
