Coach Jerry Kill retires immediately

According to his presser, he lost his energy after having a lot of seizures. He said that he's been coaching for 32 years and "never stole from anybody. I'm not going to steal now. I don't want to cheat the game."

much respect to him

Just listened to the press conference. Very hard to listen to... Says hes been ignoring his doctors and putting football first. Time has come where he doesn't have enough energy to push further.

Ended the presser with this line... "Count on your health instead of your wealth and count on God instead instead of yourself…God bless you all, thanks"

Re: Jerry Kill resigns at Minnesota ...

Ignoring an already started thread, thinking Minnesota is in the Big XII and using Comic Sans?

I'll agree with this. It was hard to listen to a guy who was totally crushed. I feel bad for him having to give up what he has given his life to for the last 32 years.

It really has been a rough week for Minnesota sports. I was in the T-wolves offices yesterday and the air smelled of roses and carnations from all of the flowers in honor of Flip. There were a lot of people over there who were pretty broken up about it.

Some people need to lighten up, even Michael J. Fox has a sense of humor about "shaking" jokes that are made about him. But I'm sure while he is laughing, you find the jokes disgusting atop your high horse.
The difference there is one man is making fun of himself for something he cannot control, the other is making fun of a man who just gave up the thing he loves because of his health. I'm a fan of dark humor and self deprecating humor, but his comment was tasteless.

But if I can give anybody any advice: Count on your health, instead of your weath and count on God instead of yourslef... At the end of the day, if you don't have health and you don't have God, you ain't going to make it.

What a great quote from J. Kill. Wish him the best.

Sidebar: I wonder if he'll go for the AD position. Although, I imagine that has it's own rigors that may impact his health as well.

Great coach. Sad to see him go but health always comes first. But as another poster said, we will now be competing against Minnesota for a new HC if JP grows balls and gets Rhoads out.

Jerry Kill retiring due to recurring health issues

This isn't Cyclone-related, but as a Gopher and Cyclone fan I wanted to post it anyway. If it doesn't fit, feel free to remove it.

Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill has seen a return of his serious health issues, and is stepping away. This is a big, big loss for Minnesota and college football in general. A tremendous coach and an even better man.

Watching his press conference was gut-wrenching. The raw emotion pouring out of a guy who, at age 54, has no idea what to do with the rest of his life, but who also knows that he won't have the rest of his life if he doesn't walk away immediately.

He'll be missed.

Re: Jerry Kill retiring due to recurring health issues

Yeah I watched the press confence, you can tell how much it pains him and how much he loved coaching for Minnesota. You can tell by his tears that he really gave it his all and he didn't want to stop.

Re: Jerry Kill retiring due to recurring health issues

thats too bad for him. He has somewhat made Minny relevant again.
and also another schools job open. We just went down another slot in the job market.

Re: Jerry Kill retiring due to recurring health issues

Yeah, Jerry Kill is a heck of a coach and a heck of a man.

For us I-State fans, it's additional competition for possible coaching replacements if Rhoads is gone after this season. Although, I am still holding out hope that Rhoads succeeds for us!

Re: Jerry Kill retiring due to recurring health issues

That press conference from Kill is truly heart breaking. The emotion and love for the game of football is tangible. Good coach and good man by all accounts.

Sad news - Kill is a great coach and that's a big loss for Minnesota. Thoughts and prayers to him and his family!

In considering possibly competing against MN for a coach & taking off the rose color glasses, I really wonder which job would be more attractive to potential coaching candidates.

MN has a nicer stadium (though we significantly closed that gap), a little easier recruiting opportunities (if they could convince MN kids to stay home). Overall, MN has had more success than ISU, historically, but don't think that's a significant difference at this point. MN is the only P5 team in the state.

ISU has nicer facilities overall, plays in the Big XII (I think that's a slight edge, but conference stability might make that neutral). ISU has much better fan support and doesn't compete locally against pro teams for "attention" (MN struggles filling a 50K seat stadium). I think ISU has a better and more supportive Athletic Department and overall University Administration.

Again - I personally can't think of a reason a coach would want to go to MN, but trying to look at it objectively, it seems like a pretty level playing field.

What other considerations did I miss?

ISU

I think you are way off with the big 10/12 comparison. I would give a significant edge to MN being in the big 10 vs big 12.

If interim coach Tracy Claeys is named the head coach permanently, I think there is a good chance that Rhoads could end up as the defensive coordinator. If Rhoads can't get this ISU thing on track for the last few games he will probably be let go.

Claeys is a great coordinator but doesn't have the charisma and communication skills of a normal head coach. These are traits that CPR certainly has. Being in Minneapolis would also keep CPR relatively close to home which seems to be something he really values.

There's no question that right now ISU has better facilities than Minnesota. Their facilities are abysmal. But the University is breaking ground this Friday on the $150 million Athletes Village, which will equal anything in the Big Ten. Kill was instrumental in the fundraising, and it's interesting that he held on until the Board of Regents gave the final ok a couple weeks ago. If he'd resigned before then, who knows how the Regents would have voted?

Okay throwing this out there now... kill takes the rest of the year off. Gets his health under control.
Idk, I just have a feeling hell want to get back into coaching. I would be absolutely ESTACTIC if Pollard hired him. I really hope he can get his health under control. He's too good of a coach and man to not be jn the profession.
