Billy Gillispie

If not Billy G. himself, I like the idea behind hiring Billy G. We took the safe road and brought in a well thought of, veteran, instate coach. That has got us nowhere. To quote the guy at the Kinko's in Jerry Maguire: "That's how you become great, man. You hang your balls out there."

Making the safe choice will do us no good this time, gotta go for a splash, for a big name. If not Gillespie, then I like the idea of going after a reach.
 
Right now our program needs a winner. I am not concerned if the guy isn't a saint. We have a saint right now and look where that got us. I think you bring Billy G in, he builds the thing to a winner quickly, moves on, and we bring in a guy with a bit more stability. Similar to the path A&M followed.

I like the idea as well, and I have no problem giving a guy a second chance. If Gillispie's transgressions were like Eustachy's I'd have no problem with it. But the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that I could never support hiring someone with 4 DUIs to a public high profile position like this. As someone who's had a family member severely injured by a drunk driver, that would just be unacceptable.

4 DUIs is a bordering on unforgivable, I agree. Perhaps though, and this doesn't excuse his past behavior, he had an "untouchable" sense about him. Commentators often refer to the basketball coach at Kentucky as the "Governor" of the state, or something of that kind, maybe he thought the law would leave him alone...and maybe at AtM he thought similarily. Now he has been caught and that fallacy could be gone. I don't know, and like I said I'm not totally behind hiring BG, but I like the idea that we would look for a reach guy instead of the predictable coach (such as bringing up an up and comer from the MVC or some other mid-major).

He did beat Iowa...that's a pretty big deal to some...

Hmm, I've tried to stay out of all the "rumors" and such, but I like the Mike Davis idea. Talk about a guy who got a raw deal.

How bout Tom Davis, that way he can be one step closer to coaching all the DI programs in the state.:jimlad:

I'm no so sure. ISU fans like their coaches to be personable. They like to be able to interact with them at Cyclone outings, when they seem them at other sporting events, on the street, etc. The laci of the "personable" aspect in Chizik is what put many fans off. "Personable" is not BG, at least it wasn't prior to his rehab.

Neither of them are the best option for ISU right now...
 
When was the fourth DUI? I see one in 1999, one in 2003, and one in 2009. Just wondering when the fourth one was.

I'd take Mike Davis..He's had only 2 losing seasons out of 10 overall in his career and only two losing records in conference play. Overall, 55-41 in Big 10 and 40-22 in C-USA. 4 NCAAs and 3 NITs in 10 years.

Mike Davis was never happy in the the midwest. he was miserable at IU, and couldn't wait to get back to the south.

Well, first, didn't you know that all of the coaches in college basketball look at the Iowa State job as career suicide. Not really a place to rehab your image.

I don't see Pollard doing this for all of the reasons listed (DUI's. Wes Johnson, etc). I still think that Greg is going to be here next year.

I have never understood the Iowa State fan's fascination with keeping coaches forever. If BCG took the job, and we were in the Sweet 16 five years from now, and he decided to take a bigger job, so what? Enjoy the success. It's the AD's job to hire coaches that are coveted.

Of course as bad as this job is, who knows if we could even get an NAIA guy to look at it.:no:

It was a direct quote from one of the people close to the program. It was reinforced by other people close to the program.
 
Who wouldn't want to come and redeem your career to a team thats struggling, if we do get Billy, we would be praising him, Hilton Magic would be back, We'd be up at the top where we belong etc etc, EXACT opposite if he digs us deeper, why'd we hire him , he was probably drunk when he took the job, etc etc.

BTW is there a link for the BG ESPN insider related to this job?
