Billy Gillispie

It is a bit scary that you don't understand the difference between "my friends and I like to drink beer" and alcoholism/4 DWIs.

Exactly.....someone's drinking becomes my business when they are driving while impaired.

Can you imagine if Billy G was arrested for DWI and he was the coach here? My god, it would put Larry's thing to shame.

I don't give a crap if he drinks. I want him to coach basketball, not babysit my kids. I like to drink beer, all my friends like to, why would I care if our coach does?

Would you give a crap if he was driving around Ames drunk?

The problem wasn't that Larry drank.... it was that our AD overreacted to him partying with college kids and fired him.

I think there are several articles in which Larry himself admitted that the problem was indeed his drinking. But, I'm sure you know better...

Agreed that he's not calm during games, but he IS much calmer than the aforementioned personalities.

I also agree he isn't calm during games. It's more of a cross between a kid that just peed his pants and is desperately trying to hide it and a death row inmate that knows his days are numbered.

i say we hire the ames high coach, proven winner. Not from a mid major, Ames is 4A after all :jimlad:

That guy is a solid recruiter too. He was at the very least able to keep Harrison Barnes from leaving to go to some basketball factory prep school out east. :jimlad:

Would you get behind the hire if there were clauses in the contract that addressed his alcohol issues?

Perhaps that is because Huggins has his alcohol issues under control. And perhaps that was the case before KSU and UVW hired him. Do you know differently?

What raised my antennae was your statement that "Gillispie is fresh out of rehab and there is no indication that he has his alcohol problems under control."
That is a bold statement. How do you know that?
I'm sure that Bob Huggins had to sell himself, and the effectiveness of his rehab, to K-State for them to hire him. They had to take him at his word. He made a huge impact there, and now has taken WV to unheard-of success.

No, as long as he wasn't causing accidents then I don't care. I would think he could afford a cab though.

Not Larry's problem... ISU's problem. We should have supported him when he went to rehab, then we would have a nice feel good story, instead of being the school who fired the alcoholic coach, then fired his replacement, then hired our current coach and plunged to the bottom of the Big 12.

Would you get behind the hire if there were clauses in the contract that addressed his alcohol issues?

Just so long as he has automatic, guaranteed extensions based on whether or not the previous coach develops alcohol issues.

Why would you hire a coach that would require such clauses? All it would do would erode stability. If he breaks one of the stipulations of the contract, then ISU is forced to hire another coach. Why take the risk?

Why do we think Billy would be able to recruit up here? When he was at A&M he recruited only Texas, basically.

There is no stability.

In fact...the program/foundation is crumbling under the current staff.

Maybe we need the risky hire to recover.

I'd be much more likely to be behind him if this type of thing is true (from the link above):

But if this is his attitude, Gillispie will be back on the sideline even sooner, and he won't need to lower himself to sketchy standards to do so. Billy Gillispie seems downright ... changed. Centered. Together.

That's more important to me than the out clause in the contract.

Why buy stock that has had the value of it's shares drop? It's an investment, a gamble that it will rebound, increase it's value back to where it once was and since you bought in when it was at rock bottom you'll be the richer for it.

I guess that's more of what I meant. Like a condition of his contract being that he continues to attend AA or something like that.
