Billy Gillispie

On May 10, Johnson packed up his belongings and left his apartment at Iowa State. A few days later, he informed McDermott that he had decided to transfer to another school. The decision surprised McDermott, who flew to Johnson’s home in Corsicana, Texas, to try to convince Johnson to stay, but to no avail.
Iowa State officials agreed to release Johnson from his scholarship commitment, but on condition that his list of schools didn’t include an opponent on the upcoming schedule.
His first two choices were Arkansas and Connecticut.
“Syracuse wasn’t on our initial list,†Carroll said. “We literally didn’t even think about Syracuse.â€
On May 28, Johnson announced an expanded list: Arkansas, Connecticut, Marquette, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Villanova and West Virginia.
There might not have been a need for a list except that Michigan State, a school that Johnson really liked, didn’t have a scholarship available.
“Syracuse got on the second list,†Carroll said. “They just came out of nowhere.â€

your oblivious. I have to ask, were you even around at the time of the situation??

Your putting Iowa State's word up against Syracuse, the school that benefited from wes getting poached from right out from underneath us, due to billy gillispie.

Just to clarify for everyone, the seciont you pasted in isn't from the cyclones.com article.

Do you really think that Wes is going to come out and say that Kentucky was his first choice with all that was going on and the fact he wasn't released there anyway? Not to mention I have heard murmurs in the past (take it fwiw)that had Wes tried to go to Kentucky then ISU would've acted on the "tampering" of Kentucky through the NCAA.

Then I think they should have let him, and go for it. I realize, ISU vs UK wouldn't have much of a case when dealing with the NCAA, but seriously. I think they would have to look at the cold hard facts.

True or not, I kind of think the Wes Johnson thing is/should be a non-issue. JP is a businessman first. He didn't hire GMac because he only hires midwestern, nice guys as coaches. He hired GMac because he thought he could sell a nice midwestern guy to the fanbase.

He will be a good fit. ISU has a great BB following. Those on here that are bashing that the likes of Gillispie of coming to a "place like Iowa State" must not think highly of our school.

I respectfully disagree with that feeling. Hilton Coliseum can take teams to new heights. I think we CAN get a guy like Coach Gillispie. We won the freaking B12 Conference Back to Back! (We have amazing fans/loyalty.....even the past 3 years we still ranked 2nd or 3rd in attendance in the B12.....and we had GMac!) Do any of you doubters remember this? Did you see the level that Larry got our teams playing? We need a coach that knows what the hell he is doing in a power conference. Hell, Floyd won the confernce tourney too when he ran the show......then took us to a sweet 16 the following year. Winning can and will happen again at ISU. We just need the right leadership/coach. And the guy we have now does not fit the bill.

We need something new/ new style of play / recruiting......everything. Gillispie needs to get back in the game....ISU has been to the top, he can get us back there. Mac has FAILED....get rid of him. Go after Big name coaches......get ISU back to where they once belonged.

I could get behind it. We dont pay the coach to be a choir boy, we pay the coach to win. And unless we somehow get struck with a freak 'chizik' situation (which, how often does that happen), even if he leaves, he will leave after putting the program in a much better place, which could give us better options than we have now coaching-wise.

I agree with whoever said "Maybe we want to become the tamporer rather than the tampereee."

Just find a winner...that's it. Billy Cyde is a winner so yeah, I'm on board. I'd prefer someone like him but with less of a DB factor but if JP pulled the trigger and got Billy Clyde nobody on here would be complaining after we start tearing **** up in the Big 12.

Look, I can understand the Wes Johnson factor has really turned people off of Billy...it's turned me off to the guy as well and I think he'd be a great fit here. But ISU needs to find a winner because if we don't we turn into Nebraska basketball...seriously, we can't afford another 3-4 run of crappy basketball. It would truly bury the program.

I was here. Maybe when you grow up you will understand that there are 2 sides to every story. GMAC could have come out and said whatever he wanted to the Cyclone Nation and the majority were going to buy it hook line and sinker. Why wouldn't they? Why believe a guy that left the program versus the coach that is such a nice guy?

GMAC knew he could say anything he wanted and nobody was going to take WJ's word over his. FYI... he also knew that WJ wasn't going to bother arguing the facts of what happened because it was quite obvious he wanted out of here really bad.

The more I hear about it, the more mass defections we have from the program under GMAC, the more I start to believe WJ and the less I believe what GMAC was selling us back then. That and his handling of the Colvin & Dendy situations and some of the things he said about them in the media.... those just make me wonder if maybe GMAC is the main reason these issues have taken place.

I agree. He would give this program an intensity and fire that we haven't had for nine years. Gillispie would be great, and I would look forward to next season, instead of dreading it.
And talk about going from a soft, perimeter team to a physical one overnight...

I agree. I have been feeling this way too about all the defections. Time to blame and can the real problem- Greg McDermott.

A new coach is coming.

to be honest cyclonestate, i'm just giving you reasons why JP won't hire Billy Gillispie. But, i'll tell you that if we fire GMAC and do hire him I would be perfectly fine with it. I would feel a little bad for Mac that he got replaced with a dude that kicked him in the stones so hard, but lets face it. Mac has kicked all of us fans in the stones by losing, and losing by a lot time and time again.

Yes. I don't get why the Chizek thing gets brought up here. We were FORTUNATE to get rid of Chizek, but that doesn't change the fact that coaches that get poached to other programs aren't the problem. Coaches that can't produce and that we have to pay after they're fired are.

Pollard boned the McDermott hire, but he boned the contract even worse. If we don't get rid of Mac after this season (I don't think we will) it won't be because Pollard is being patient and thinks things will work out. It will be because we can't afford to get rid of him and that god forsaken albatross of a contract. That doesn't bode will for the future of our program. IF Gillispie were an option, we'd have a guy that knew what it takes to take a program going nowhere and turn it in to a proven winner. That's what we pay a bb coach to do. What may or may not have happened with Wes Johnwon is in the past and not relevant in my mind. The rest is just details.

Some of you seem to think we are hiring this guy to babysit your kids. That is incorrect. We are hiring him to coach basketball.

I guess the holier than thou crowd who rip on anyone who has ever made a mistake don't like him.... but lets be honest, who cares?

The rest of us are just looking for a good basketball coach, not a role model or someone we can use to brag about how clean our program is while we finish at the bottom of the Big 12 year after year.

Gillespie would be a great hire. If only your looking for a coach with zero baggage, we'll end up with another Gmac who consistenly goes 4-12.

It's cool. I totally understand the angle you were taking on this. I honestly don't care who we hire at this point as long as we break free from the shackles (GMAC) that are holding this program down.

I laugh at the thought that he is trying to bring in 3 juco players from Iowa. :biglaugh: Seriously.... that is the GMAC formula for winning in the BIG XII? Even Brian Peterson thinks that is a terrible plan.

I wouldn't be happy about hiring him, but I'm sure I would get behind him if we started winning (just like 95% of the rest of the fanbase would). He does have a history of quickly turning around struggling programs, but with everything else that has happened there is no way he would be my first choice.

I flat refuse the argument that our choices are a coach with "baggage" or 4-12.

We can win with integrity.

Floyd is a potential cheater, Eustachy was a drunk, DMAC beat his wife, etc..... and on down the line we go. The only difference is they all have out performed the choir boy we have coaching our team right now. 2 weeks.... 2 weeks until hopefully the 4 years of choir practice are OVER!!!!!!!!!:yes:
