Big12 Tournament Takeaway

I've been pretty down on this team during its lulls this season. I really struggled to understand how a team with such a high ceiling could so often play with such a low floor against pretty mediocre competition. Tired? Exposed by coaches who figured us out? Didn't really matter - we looked cooked at a couple of different points.

This week was highly encouraging. When we show up we can play with anyone. If we do that, I think the thing that might be our undoing is going up against a team like Arizona that is just better than we are at grinding out buckets when they absolutely have to have them. They had more elite shotmakers, and only barely.

I sat right behind the ISU bench, not 50 feet from where Monte Morris hit that iconic shot to beat Texas in 2015. Tonight was a near carbon copy. Not much else to do but tip your cap and hope for a good seed and matchup.
Pretty mediocre competition?
Cincinnati is the only team ISU lost to that isn't in the tournament and they've actually been on the bubble. Probably have an argument against some teams supposedly in.

Realistically, an Elite 8 run would be phenomenal to see and well deserved, but I think with our recent streakiness (non-KC games), we should probably have Sweet 16 as our "floor". The other opportunities shall remain unsaid for lack of historical backing, or the opposite....

Putting my Negative Ned hat on, we get turnovers against good teams but they adjust the 2nd half, and we get bogged down playing half court offense.

Toure stepping up was huge. Buchanan with some needed inside buckets too was a nice plus.

I think the streakiness can be seen in a lot of the top teams as they got a little bored with the regular season and wanted to look ahead a bit, which is natural. This team seems ultrafocused now and the seniors are playing like there's no tomorrow, because there isn't.

UCONN and this Duke team don’t belong in that group either IMO. Truth is, you have two conferences where you know what you have cause you’ve seen it night after night for the last month. And you have two conferences where you just don’t know how good the top teams are because they haven’t been tested.
Duke did play (and beat) Michigan not too long ago. Boozer is a load.

You of course want to win but we were looking pretty hobbled there at the end. I really didn’t want any part of getting mauled by Houston. Did what we needed to do to hopefully secure a 2, and found something with Toure, Milan, Tamin and JJ. That’s a huge success

Guys played their asses off! Just think, we got nothing from Batemon and still only lost at the buzzer. This is the team we all hoped would show back up! Now…time to really grind and not be playing teams that know us so well!!

With ISU (& probably KU) going out I think KC is going to make far less money this weekend.
Houston/Arizona will be an epic battle. Bet you can get a decent ticket for $100/$150 with KU and ISU out. Edit: some lower bowl seats listed for $50-$75 after fee price. Dirt cheap for such a good game.

Had seats not far from ISU bench. Team was dragging to the huddle on timeouts late in the second half. Legs were gone

I'm normally moody and cranky after every loss but I don't even feel bad after this one. Not having to play four games in four days is a benefit, especially with guys getting dinged up. I want Iowa State to win it all, but will be picking Arizona in my bracket
And not having to play in that floor again. Pretty sure the second Texas Tech injury was solely due to the floor.
