I saw the Heavy Metal thread and it got me thinking..

Who in your mind is the best guitarist? It doesn't have to be in heavy metal, but any genre.

My list:
Dimebag
Herman Li (Dragonforce)
Jimi Hendrix
Stevie Vai
Orianthi

If you don't know Orianthi check her out. She is hot and she has mad guitar skills.

In metal:

Alex Skolnick

However it depends on what you want. Shredding solos or great song writing? Thomas Youngblood is an amazing songwriter, along with pre-Load album James Hetfield.

Hendrix
Allman
Clapton
Yngwie
Eric Johnson
Derek Trucks
Leo Kottke
Alex Lifeson

The list goes on and on. Its almost impossible to name just one because of the diversity of the guitar.

Obviously the Smiling Stone Soup drummer. I mean he rocks so hard that he makes an acoustic guitar explode into an electric.

I'm always going to go with Tom Morello.

Tim Reynolds that often plays with Dave Matthews is an incredible guitar player. More of an acoustic spin but can still do amazing things with the strings.

A lot of people seem to vocally oppose, but I think Jack White is one of the most ingenious and innovative guitarists and song writers of this generation.

Every time I hear/see Jack White's name brought up regarding music I picture Jack Black for some reason.

Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I don't think he gets enough credit in these type of conversations. Probably because he is a DB and no-one can stand him.

Also agree with SRV and would throw in Clapton and Page. Hendrix will always be #1.

There are many good to great to elite gutarists in R&R. I guess it is whose music you like and I think Santana, Clampton, Beck are guys I like and must be near the top of the game. Butler is pretty good too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VAkOhXIsI0

For innovation, ability, originality and style I think Hendrix is the one.
